Andy Zahn for WA LD20
@electandy.bsky.social
I grew up in Toutle, working as a farm hand, public lands steward, writer, and photographer. I am running for the legislature not to become a career politician, but to fight for rural SW WA and everything I love about this place. 20th LD 2026 candidate
It's also really difficult for me to plan anything months in advance! I usually only know for sure if I will have time to spare a few weeks ahead of time at most.

This is essentially how the Fairholme campground in Olympic National Park is operated, and last time I stayed there it was much less difficult to get a campsite thanks to the staggered reservation system.

I have the same problem getting tent sites. One thing that would help to free-up more campsites of all kinds would be to reform how reservations are offered. More campgrounds should implement staggered reservation windows; some sites offered a month in advance, others two weeks, others a week.

Think of the new park system as laying the foundation for expanded outdoor recreation opportunities across rural Western Washington. It's designed to kick things off and snowball into something far greater.

I expect that as visitation rises, communities are likely to invest in larger capacity campgrounds nearby with full hookups to capitalize on the influx of outdoor recreation. If there is enough demand, such campgrounds can be profitable ventures for counties and towns.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind. At least to start out with these parks need to be "rough-and-ready". The idea is to get them up and running quickly on as small a budget as possible, and for ongoing maintenance costs to also be minimal.

We should also ensure that data centers are the first to have their electricity and water supply restricted if there is a shortage of either.
