close to 100% of the money in the media space is the “make my daughter change her major to business and take out that stupid nose ring” industrial complex

one guy was literally the subject of a song about how he was going to become president and do Hippie Fascism, and that was our *least* egomaniacal governor

California must be governed by an egomaniac at all times

i don’t even know where i was going with this, there’s gotta be a joke in here on “tribbles”/“trillions” and furries vs fictional aliens that are literally just fur, but idk how to word it

Trump vs. US was the final straw imo. You cannot read that ruling and continue believing they have legitimacy. It is not only against the plain text of the constitution, it is anathema to the national ethos. It is offensively, insultingly un-American and they ceded legitimacy by committing that sin.

“we should make life Worse, because that will make humans Better”: this is the creed of our enemies, and everyone animated by disgust for their fellow humans will find their way to it.

authoritarianism is a consistent ideology whose adherents favor whatever policy minimizes freedom qua freedom!

“People are good, and deserve good things” remains far more subversive and revolutionary of an idea than people give it credit for

Basically: This administration wants to kill people. One of its core goals appears to be to lower the population.

you: ok but please make sure the housing actually gets built
them: ooh also we gotta make sure it revitalizes downtown corridors
you: the best way to do that is to make sure housing actually gets built
them: yeah sure ok hold on i gotta check with the league of cities, they’re a key stakeholder

getting Rs to support pro-housing bills: THINK FAST, ALEC-ENDORSED DEREGULATION INCOMING, NO TIME FOR FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS

getting Ds to support pro-housing bills:
you: time to build more housing
them: yes. and create well paid jobs
you: but mainly the housing, right?
them: yes. and rooftop solar

honestly, Democrats acknowledging a housing supply shortage is old hat at this point; they almost all do. the challenge is getting them to say, and endorse in their laws, “there is a conflict between getting more housing built and other worthy aims, and right now more housing is more important”

Vietnam was absolutely due to Gender, specifically LBJ’s horror at the idea of backing down from a fight/being seen to lack resolve (or being less manly than JFK)

I feel really strongly that it is impossible to create art that can’t be misinterpreted, and that a world without any art that idiots misinterpret as a license to do evil would be drastically worse than our current world.

in general Americans are irrationally bearish on France

like, this could be the time their luck runs out, but it’s been several decades of people going “France is about to fall to the far right!” and that not happening, while the US has fallen to the far right multiple times

iirc Paris has high housing costs for a non-Anglosphere metropolis, exacerbated by strict height limits (tho admittedly the case for aesthetic rules is strongest in Literally Paris), but yeah also Francophobia

as I understand it doctors are specifically told to not answer questions about payment and to refer patients elsewhere, because they’re not the experts on insurance stuff

which is probably for the best but is an underrated reason a lot of people might have trouble trusting doctors!

No. That would definitely require SB 79.
elikahn.bsky.social
It works best in conjunction with SB 79, since AB 130 doesn’t on its own preempt local zoning provisions themselves, but it’s still a big deal and also interacts well with existing missing-middle reforms
elikahn.bsky.social
Among other provisions (a bunch of stuff about defining permit application completeness and making permanent some protections against arbitrary permit delay/denial, etc), AB 130 exempts a ton of infill housing from CEQA and from Coastal Commission oversight
elikahn.bsky.social
I agree SB 79 is incredibly important legislation and it would be a disaster if Newsom vetoed it, but imo AB 130 is a bigger deal and already makes this year the biggest in CA pro-housing legislation history regardless of what happens with SB 79
