I wonder if that's true at the population level! I personally was educated at a Catholic school largely by rule-oriented old-fashioned "don't ask questions just do what I say" people, and it just ... didn't stick (re punctuation or anything else).
eliotedits.bsky.social
When I'm writing for publication I do edit down my em dashes and paretheticals, but in my journal and emails and stuff I am freeeeee
eliotedits.bsky.social
Look. I have very long thoughts and many of them are embedded. (I *have* read some stuff suggesting that neurodivergent people tend to punctuate & structure sentences differently, in various ways depending on the brain quirkiness[es] in play, and I think that's kinda neat to ponder in this vein.)
eliotedits.bsky.social
The em dashes = AI thing is bizarre. People can wrest my em dashes from my cold dead very human hands. (And ellipses. And parentheses. And indeed en dashes lol. ilu punctuation marks)
eliotedits.bsky.social
Looking up thoughts on a particular use of ellipses, I came across the blanket statement "Editors don't like ellipses." This amuses me to no end so I am passing it along to you. (I did not realize I'm supposed to dislike whole entire punctuation marks; I don't think I have it in me! alas)

The 'kin' of ‘napkin’ means "little."

‘Nap’ comes from ‘nape,' which means “tablecloth.”

So a napkin is a little tablecloth.

10/10, no notes.

Goodnight, all. May we all know moments of peace and sun-warmed bliss like this adorable ocean potato I saw today.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.
