No matter how irritating Jill was, it didn’t seem to matter so much when Milo carried over two coffees and a muffin. “I need to leave another online review for this place. The service is terrific,” Edie said, taking her cup gratefully. Milo settled into the chair closest to her, playfully bumping her knee with his. “You’re gonna get me in trouble with the manager for giving away free muffins,” he teased. “You are the manager. Are you going to write yourself up?”  “I do not want to be me when I have to read my report,” Milo said dryly.

“I love [Redacted] and [Redacted] more than anything else in the world,” [Redacted] said, his dark eyes growing soft just at the mention of them. “They’re my guiding lights in the deep waters. I would do anything for them. And they love me enough to follow me up here, despite all the trouble I put them through. But yeah, we fall in love, in the way that you mean. The kind of love that feels like a rising tide, that cradles you like a warm current, and rushes through your blood like lightning dances across the surface. But that kind of love – we call it something different. And it’s…temporary, I guess. The relationship is, anyway. You carry the love in your heart for the rest of your life.”

The warmth of his kiss was a strong antidote for the chill settled over her skin. “I'd hate for the whole night to go to waste,” Edie murmured. “What’d you have in mind?” Milo’s voice rumbled low in his chest. He bent over her, his breath tickling the delicate hairs on the back of her neck. His lips traced the line of her jaw, pausing just beneath her ear.

Luke held out his hand, a silent invitation; Isabelle took it gratefully, though he suspected she didn’t need the help with her balance as she delicately stepped into the water with a sharp, quick inhale. “Is it too hot?” he asked. “It’s fine,” Isabelle assured him. “I’m the one interrupting your bath.” “Enhancing,” he corrected. That earned him another small smile. This was new, the two of them spending time together after sex. She seemed soft, and unsure; almost like she was becoming less defined in herself, and was retreating back. Luke didn’t want Isabelle to withdraw. He wanted to know everything about her, he realized with a small, giddy rush. How warm she wanted the bath water, what she looked like when she was waking up, what she liked to eat and wear and do.

“If you’re scared, I’ll do it with you,” Milo said. He said it as though it were the most natural thing in the world. When Edie looked at him, he was holding out his hand, and watching her with a sincerity she didn’t think she’d ever seen on anyone’s face. If it had been anyone else, at any other time, she would have thought they were making fun of her; but not Milo. Not when she took his hand, and he carefully walked with her across the bridge. He didn’t let go until Edie was breathing more calmly, and she was able to let go of him first.

His expression lightened slightly. “If you want,” he amended. “I know we were going to go anyway. With everyone else. But if you want, we could go to the Beach Bash.” Understanding finally clicked. “Like you and me? Like on a date?” “If you want.” He said it casually. Trying not to make it seem like a big deal. “So we’d have, you know. At least one of those.”

The time apart no longer mattered when he knelt between her legs, a shuddering breath escaping him as slid into her slick entrance. He felt the same urgency, but managed more control behind each thrust, despite the burning need of the moon’s beckoning. Isabelle’s eyes squeezed shut as she dragged her nails down his back. He bucked into her, his cock riding into her heat until she sank her teeth into his shoulder, muffling her scream of release. Luke whispered sweet encouragements as jagged friction coarsed down his spine; his hips jerked with erratic need until he burst into her again. And still, it wasn’t enough. Isabelle’s bones groaned with the abandoned promise of shifting. She pushed Luke down and mounted him, his slick cock pushing deep. She rolled her hips frantically, desperate to feel him stretching every inch of her. She lacked his grace and elegance; she was reduced to a simple, primal need. Pent up lust to change, for bloodshed, to feel his heat burst inside her again and again. Luke's fingers dug into her hips as he thrust up into her. For a second, it seemed as though sharp fangs gleamed inside his mouth when he growled with need; but then he was Luke again, and she shattered into electric sensations. He gripped her thighs, pulling her legs apart and rutting frantically into her.

Kind of weird to brag about, but okay,” Manny said with a snort. “No, I mean I – yes, I have been known to, on occasion, with …” Edie buried her face in her hands.

“You heard that story already?” Milo asked. Edie realized she’d come to a stop, and Milo and Viola were both staring at her. Prickles of anxiety fought with the cold hands squeezing her heart. “Not really,” she said, biting her lip. “Teddy – my dad – he just mentioned it, that there’s – that Janie Booker is a …” It was just a story, she told herself. Ghost stories weren’t real. But there really was a little stone bridge ten feet away, and she knew the name of a girl who supposedly haunted it, and saying the word ‘ghost’ out loud seemed like a very, very bad idea. She probably shouldn’t have even said Janie Booker’s name. She could hear the trickle of the stream running along the bank. If she listened hard enough, would she hear a girl’s voice? “I’m really bad at scary stuff.”

“I wonder if he kept my art project,” Cat said. “We spent so much of our time here that for my senior year art class, I made a clay pizza. All broken apart in different layers, with a sauce layer, a cheese layer, different toppings. All fired up and glazed separately. I had to do the mushrooms three times because the color never looked right. My parents wouldn’t have approved of the art classes, so I thought I’d just give it to Mr. Day rather than let my mom throw it out. He thought it was hilarious. I barely thought anything of giving it to him, but he was just…delighted. It was the first time I ever gave anything I’d made to someone. His reaction really changed something in me. It mattered to someone, so I could let it matter to me.”

15 yo Edie is helping her adult cousin Kelly by working in her store. Kelly is helping Edie with some crucial background information about Bludeye Beach.
“Half the people come here for the beach, the other half come for the lore shit. You should probably take some time to learn it if you’re gonna blend in.” Kelly grabbed Edie’s hand and led her to a skinny bookshelf. She traced each spine with a blue fingernail before landing on a book called Bludeye the Unnatural.  “Here’s your bonus for the week. At least skim it, okay?” Despite the small line that was starting to form at the register, Kelly paused a moment. She pulled her star sunglasses slightly down her nose, peering at Edie. Her dark eyes were normally obscured by the blue stars, or pink hearts, or green triangles. They were startling, Kelly’s eyes. For the briefest second, Edie was almost afraid of her cousin. “Seriously. This can come in handy.”
