I spent two years in Germany; the first sponsored by the German government and the second funded via a Fulbright research grant. They launched this Alaskan into the world, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without them. These programs are essential. I’m outraged!

Study Abroad Funding Is Paused, Leaving Some Students Stranded (Gift Article)
The Trump administration stopped State Department funding for scholarships like the Fulbright. Weeks later, it is still unclear when it may resume.

Here we agree. Students, you are perfect the way God made you: male, female, queer, trans, non-binary and more. I will continue to support all kids who come through my classroom doors.

Germany’s persistent division was so apparent during this weekend’s election. For a solid analysis of this, and the rise of the AfD in the former east, read this article (gifted!) www.nytimes.com/2025/02/25/w...
In Former East Germany, the Hard-Right AfD Party Finds Most of Its Support (Gift Article)
The former East Germany still votes virtually as a separate country — and increasingly for a party that has been linked to neo-Nazis.

German election results are in. FDP and BSW failed to hit the 5% threshold to be in the Bundestag. That means the numbers fall in a way that we could see a CDU/SPD “grand coalition” in Germany. The AfD made enormous strides and will double their congressional presence.

Our German supporters made us realize we made a mistake, and we want to acknowledge it. Germany, you’re in our thoughts. While we’re relieved that AfD was defeated, we understand this is not a moment for celebration. There is still much work ahead, and we stand in solidarity with you.

www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02... Gifting this! JD Vance just promoted far-right parties in Munich, specifically promoting the AfD, Germany’s far right party. Elections are in nine days! Germans have been pushing back, and all parties have stated they will never form a coalition with the AfD.

Germany heads to federal elections on Sunday, February 23. Early today, a car driven by a young asylum seeker plowed into a protest group in Munich, injuring 30. This, 10 days before said election, in which immigration is the hot topic.

Agreed. This is not happenstance. Far-right political leaders from abroad (including the AfD) were at the inauguration today. German parliament will debate the question of the AfD this week, with federal elections looming next month.
You can argue that Elon Musk isn't a neo-Nazi, though all the evidence points in the opposite direction, including his open embrace of the German neo-Nazi party AfD and the antisemitic Great Replacement Theory.

What you cannot claim is that he didn't know exactly what he was doing with this salute.

Watching our next president speak, I’m thinking of my recent read “Strongmen” by Ruth-Ben Ghiat. I highly recommend it, an eye opener about authoritarian rule worldwide with observances of the first Trump presidency.

First post - trying to find myself on a new platform. My stomach is in knots today thinking of 4 more years here. Germany debates a ban on the AFD in parliament this week, and I’m doubtful it will change what I see coming. I’m going to go make some coffee, grade some papers and read a book!
