Hello everyone - count me in for a #SciArt #ArtShare. I'm a microbiologist turned scientific illustrator. I like to draw and paint and print all things microbes - not technically invertebrates, but they've got no backbone... 😉
Vector illustration of brightly coloured microbes in a purple sea of ideas, processes and environments. The microbes are bold and orange, yellow, green, red-purple and blue purple. There are hints of light bulbs, ribosomes, DNA bases, farming, root systems, specimen tubes, petri dishes, water treatment, intestines, pills, cogs... A purple tube - the gastrointestinal tract, covered with purple villi and red bacteria. In the foreground, there is a yellow scientist wielding a cyclopeptide bow, firing a cyclopeptide arrow upwards at a red bacterium, which breaks its shell, with orangey red contents spilling out and shards of cell wall falling everywhere. Cartoon of Jekyll (blue, worried, on the left side) turning into Hyde (red, scary bloodshot eyes and pointy teeth on the right side) as a rod shaped bacterium. It is holding a green bubbling test tube. Bacterial ghosts are in the background, which is blue/purple Orange/pink star on a black background. The star is made of orange bacteria of different shapes with purple phage mixed in.

Lactobacillus, what a #LittleLegend !
Part of our gut and vaginal microbiome, this microbe is one of the most widely used #probiotics to treat diarrhoea and eczema. Thanks to Hiral Raval, a @microbiologysociety.org champion, for suggesting I draw this for #InternationalMicroorganismDay

Happy birthday to Danish #physicist Niels Bohr (1885-1962). 🧪🐡🎢 #histsci One of his most famous contributions to quantum mechanics was the Bohr-Rutherford model of the atom. Bohr is shown next to the Bohr model of the Hydrogen atom (all the concentric circles are actually at the appropriate spacing
My linocut of Niels Bohr with the Bohr model of the hydrogen atom and Balmer series of spectral lines. Bohr is printed in blue-grey and wearing a suit. Concentric rings of silver represent energy levels in hydrogen and overlap his head. Squiggly lines go between pairs of silver orbits and match the colours of the line spectra printed below him (left to right: red, cyan, blue and violet. H-alpha is red and caused by a jump from the 3rd to 2nd orbit; H-beta is cyan and caused by a jump from the 4th to 2nd orbit; H-gamma is indigo and caused by a jump from the 5th to 2nd orbit; and H-delta is violet and caused by a jump from the 6th to 2nd orbit.

Sea Pigs sketches. Scotoplanes are a type of sea cucumber that use a ring of feeding tentacles to sift through sediment for decaying organic matter on the sea floor and have tube-like feet for locomotion. Drawn with Rotring Art pens with Platinum Carbon and Sepia ink. #SciArt #Sketch #FountainPen

The one of the main reason I chose to make this #LaurierBiology “poster” in this format / size was that post-seminar it would fit into the hallway window of Zhongwei’s office! #SciArt

"5 of pills", oil on watercolour paper, 5 /14 x 7 1/4", 2025- $125 (Cdn) #art #sciart
A small painting of 5 pills in the formation of a "5" playing card - 4 in the corners, one in the center. There's a red & white capsule, a pink oval, yellow & blue tablets, and a white oval.

It's #Inktober once more, time to grab some pen and paper. Will you join?

The first prompt is #Mustache, and this distinguished gentlebacterium is using one of its flagellum as a mustache.

#inktober day 3 with #Crown

And here is our 👑 Queen B (Queen Bacterium) : E. coli

It is a ubiquitous bacterium.
It is the "lab rat" of microbiology.
And it is also a common resident of our gut.

Which bacterium would you have named as our Queen B?

#inktober day 5 with Deer

That one was tricky.

When a deer or any organism dies, microbes begin the decomposition process, returning nutrients to the soil.

Day 7, Share. Inoviruses are filamentous single stranded DNA phages that can be produced continuously and exported by their host without lysis and killing their host. They have a single repeating major coat protein that covers their length and specialised spike proteins. #Drawtober #SciArt #Phagesky
Black and white ink drawing of two long filamentous phages. The one in the background is all the same distance away. In the foreground is a close up of the spike proteins of the closer phage with 5 repeated protein complexes forming what looks almost like a flower, the rest of the inovirus loops around into the background

This year's Nobel Prize in physics recognizes the discovery of practical ways to achieve quantum tunneling, which electrons can jump across "forbidden" barriers.

I love the official explanatory cartoon from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences:

www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physi... 🧪
This macroscopic particle-like system is initially in a state in which current flows without any voltage. The system is trapped in this state, as if behind a barrier that it cannot cross. In the experiment the system shows its quantum character by managing to escape the zero-voltage state through tunnelling. The system’s changed state is detected through the appearance of a voltage.

Day 4, Claw. Phages don't really have claws, but they do have tail fibres that recognise receptors on host cells and clamp on, allowing phage particles to infect their hosts. #drawtober #SciArt #Phagesky

Day 5, Moon. The physical structures of phages are often compared to the shape and landing action of a lunar lander, with tail fibres reminiscent of the landing struts, to gently settle on the surface of its host. #Drawtober #SciArt #Phagesky

Day 6, Sacrifice/Cry. Individual bacterium can sacrifice themselves to prevent phages reproducing and save the rest of the bacterial community. They can also send out quorum sensing messages to warn other bacteria. #Drawtober #SciArt #Phagesky

Day 3, Soft. Soft agar is used to visualise phages - plaque assay: bacteria infected with phages are mixed with soft agar, poured over an agar plate. A bacterial lawn grows & plaques appear - as phages infect bacteria, multiply, kill & repeat to form an expanding hole. #drawtober #SciArt #Phagesky
