Albert Bierstadt is best remembered for his paintings of the American West, but during his early career, the ambitious artist also created New England landscapes, particularly of the White Mountains, as seen here. When this painting was first exhibited in 1863, critics declared it Bierstadt’s “best work” and praised the artist’s deft contrast of “light and shade,” which brought a heightened realism to the image. Bierstadt’s affinity for the White Mountains mirrored a growing interest in the region as one of America’s premiere tourist attractions. Photographs of the area from the 19th century suggest that Bierstadt utilized landscape elements from the popular tourist site “The Flume” in this imaginary composition. “Waters began her career in 1843 as an itinerant portrait painter, but abandoned the medium in the 1850s, turning instead to photography, including ambrotypes and daguerreotypes. She returned to painting in the late 1860s, focusing on still lifes, landscapes, and animal pictures. Waters’ career was revitalized in 1876, when she exhibited Still Life—Mallard Ducks (location unknown) in the Centennial International Exhibition, America’s first major world’s fair, held in Philadelphia. The fair was said to bring "her fame. . .far beyond expectation, causing a continuous receipt of orders impossible to fill." This dynamic animal painting, which features three American red squirrels set against the foliage of an American chestnut tree, was likely painted in the aftermath of the Centennial. The work reveals Waters’ mature, naturalistic style in its careful delineation of a variety of textures—from the spiky husks of the chestnut pods to the thick, multi-colored fur of the squirrels’ tails.”

John Lavery (1856-1941) was a Belfast born society portraitist who created exquisite images of French landscapes, English interiors & female beauty. His great muse was his American wife, Hazel. He loved her so much he personified her as the symbol of Ireland with her harp.

"Sunrise on the Matterhorn" by Albert Bierstadt, c. 1897. Born in Prussia he emigrated to the US and became famous for painting the sweeping and towering landscapes of the American West, reflecting the romantic style and vision of the artists of the Hudson River School.

Joseph Yoakum, a Black and Native American artist who began drawing landscapes at age 76, blending his memories with imagined mountains and streams, has influenced my work since the very beginning. Yoakum’s mountains show up in many of the paintings in my 2022 show.

My favorite painting at the #Cleveland art museum (with #alt text)
A beautiful painting of a sunset over wilderness. The sky is on fire, pale, yellow near the horizon with brilliant pink and reds strewn across purple against the background of pale blue. The breast strokes of light that just kissed, the trees are so realistic. Everything almost photographic, and yet better, in a gilt frame. The plaque for the painting reads: twilight in the wilderness 1860 oil on canvas by Frederick Edwin Church, American 1826 to 1900 in his New York studio church painted the spectacular view of a blazing sunset over wilderness near Mount Katahdin in Maine, which he had sketched during a visit nearly 2 years earlier, although church was often Granger of pristine American landscapes in his work, this painting appears to have additional overtones created on the eve of the Civil War. The painting subject can be interpreted as symbolically evoking the oncoming configuration, churches, considerable technical skills and clever, showmanship contribute to his fame as the premier artist of his generation rather than debut the painting in an annual exhibition with works by other artists as was custom church instead, exhibited it by itself at a prestigious, art gallery, coaxed by advanced publicity and highly favorable press, several hundred came to view at its seven week run
