I'm excited to announce that I will be joining University of Alberta this fall as a Killam Postdoctoral Fellow in English and Film Studies to work on my project "A History of Tactile Writing and Reading."

Thanks so much for sharing my question!

Do you know how footnotes were handled in such books? How does the narrator indicate that they're moving between main text and footnote?

Can anyone recommend an academic audiobook that was well done? Looking for a good example of how to handle citations, footnotes, bibliography, etc. in audiobook format. Ideally an academic monograph. Please only recommend if you've read the audiobook and thought it was well done.

Thank you! It's not too different from the peanut sauce recipe I use for stir-fry and hotpot. Very nice to have a vinaigrette variation of it!

Ooh can you please share the recipe for the dressing? It sounds delicious.

Ah okay. I was wondering if that was why she decided not to use braille contractions, as the set of type you have doesn't include the contraction characters.

Happy I could help! Did @aelang.bsky.social use the letterpress braille type to create the braille on this object?

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

A friendly reminder to please use alt text when you post images. Some of you are posting really cool things that I'd love to share, but I won't repost anything without alt text. If you struggle to remember, there's a setting you can turn on that will remind you to add it before you post.

Fair enough! Could be worth getting one in Montreal to try it and then you can know for sure. I hope you enjoy your trip!

Also if you eat meat, definitely go to Schwartz's Deli. It's a Montreal classic. And St-Viateur Bagels. My in-laws are Quebecois and have family in Montreal, and those were the two places they insisted on when we visited.

There is a tipping culture in Canada. I think server minimum wage works differently than the US, but we still tip.

As for a comic shop, I highly recommend Librairie Drawn & Quarterly. D&Q is a graphic novel publisher, and they run a comic shop as well (with more than just their books).

October is blindness awareness month and you might have noticed that recently I've been talking more about vision in general lately. I'm going to answer some common questions and give you some facts. First, blindness is a spectrum. Only 10% of us see nothing, most have residual/some usable vision

My condolences, Ryan. I went through this last week with my sweet Moscato. It's so hard. I'm sure you and your family have lots of loving memories of Millie to look back on.

Oh I love this. "Best of" anthologies are so interesting bc of their unique position in publishing. I wrote a paper for a PhD class about how "best of" SF anthologies act as an archive—collecting and preserving what already exists elsewhere in one place. Very intrigued to see where you go with this!

"Too often people underestimate what people with disabilities are really capable of ... the false belief that disability somehow limits intellect or ambition, in reality those assumptions say more about their own biases than they do about the individual." 👏

Good discussion with someone who was initially told he couldn't study computer science at uni because he is blind. Spoiler alert: he could, he did, and he is now employed as a computer scientist. #UKHE really needs to get better at understanding disability

I won't be viewing or supporting the new HP HBO show.

We already had a definitive adaptation of the wizarding world. I truly wish those resources had gone to adapt another fantasy series. There are SO many genre authors who deserve that kind of high budget visibility.

Thank you. We lost him Thursday morning last week. He told us it was time, so there's zero doubt it was the right thing to do. It just sucks that the right thing is so awful. I miss him desperately.
