🔋🐝💾Hello! Im lee. I make: zines about electronics, fancy alligator clips, hardware stickers, and custom fidget rings. You may remember me from organizing such conferences as @oshwassociation.bsky.social, @dinacon.bsky.social and more. I run a lil non profit called Radio Snack and am an artist.

we're (virtually) looking at among other things maps and technology and art with a class from Concordia today and so you should all read this essay from @stephencass.bsky.social because it's poignant and lovely

I just wanted to add this to the map discourse: an essay I wrote for EmpherMAL, the zine from @mediaarchaeology.bsky.social — it's about the glory days of personal cartography in the 80s; text, flip-screen, and FPS games; Discworld books; and D&D then and now (p10): archive.org/details/ephe...

I think it's good to have a blind character where it isn't a major plot point or gimmick. Like a character that is just casually happens to be blind. Assume they are well adjusted to their disability and have coping skills. Talk to a blind person when you write.

I think it's important to understand that things might not always be easy fixes and often accomodation is hard but important. But I guess I'm the spirit of your question, raised text on labels, large high contrast print, audio description, environmental audio cues.

I think first is understanding that we also are makers! And yeah keep that web contrast high! :)

What do you see? This is an annoying question but here you go. Here's a pic from my trip to Japan. I edited it to show how I remember actually seeing Japan. I had a great time and it was dope.

If you have questions I will answer them.

It's really weird when people get awkward or feel bad. Just be normal. It's okay to say the word disabled or blind. It's fine. Just relax. Disabled people are segregated, living in poverty, isolation, and I'm incredibly fucking lucky to be in the world. Make more blind friends.

Some questions: how do you do electronics if they're so small? I memorize board layouts and feel things and sometimes take pictures and idk I just make it work. How do you draw? I get real close. How do you computer? Get real close / lots of typos / text to speech

People tend to say accomodations are possible but most of the world is not accessible. If I only went places that were accessible or comfortable id literally never go out side. I also spend a lot of time pretending to see shit you're pointing at or avoiding specific situations.
leeborg.bsky.social
For example, for me, I take risks because I need to for my happiness. I just need to be active and sometimes it's weird. Blindness can be humbling. I do dumb blind shit all the time. Literally today I stole a machine from somebody at the gym. Idk I just keep going or I'll die.

Second is that everyone in the blindness spectrum is different. Field of view, light sensitivity, acuity, are just some factors. It's very hard to measure or describe. Some people with similar vision can have different abilities. This can have to do with comfort, or even personalities!

October is blindness awareness month and you might have noticed that recently I've been talking more about vision in general lately. I'm going to answer some common questions and give you some facts. First, blindness is a spectrum. Only 10% of us see nothing, most have residual/some usable vision

The work I do at @oshwassociation.bsky.social has meant a lot to me helping people re-imagine how we engage with technology. For me, salvaging, repairing, sharing, co-creating are all part of rethinking technology. Working with open source communities that embrace the values is amazing!

Ive spent so much time working with tech people doing tech things on tech deadlines. In the past few years my practice has turned to analog tools (print making, zines, drawing) in my own personal protest. 1/3
