Our Muslim community contribute a huge amount to our lives here in my electorate of Melbourne.

They are valued, they are respected, and we celebrate them.

I wish the same could be said of those in Canberra.

Let’s remember the very real impact that racism & Islamophobia has on our community here in Melbourne - especially on women, who experience an increase in violence, harassment and abuse when these kinds of stunts are pulled in Canberra.

It's not a joke. It's people's lives.

Cutting crime prevention programs while crowing about locking up kids for life - just to win votes - is a new low for Labor and Premier Jacinta Allan.

Even Labor Ministers have admitted that this decision was made purely to win votes at the next election.

This decision is all about politics - not about outcomes,

Experts in youth crime are reeling after Labor's announcement yesterday (that some 14 year olds could be sent to prison for 20 years to life) because they’ve been crying out for Labor to invest in programs that work to reduce crime. Instead, Labor has cut them.

If Labor was serious about community safety, they'd invest in preventing harm before it happens, not in locking up kids for life.

Instead, Labor is cutting funding to crime prevention, mental health and youth services - the very supports that keep communities safe. (2/2)

Youth detention pushes kids under 14 towards more serious offending and adult crime. And First Nations children are disproportionately incarcerated as a result of racism and over-policing in our justice system.
