Back in Belfast after 15 wonderful years working and living in Brussels. Formerly food @ European Consumer Organisation (@beuc.bsky.social) trying to make healthier choices easier for all! Still dipping a toe into EU Food Policy.

Think I need a shower after reading this exposé into the dirty tricks of the meat industry (and their paid shills) who worked relentlessly to undermine the EAT Lancet planetary diet...

Having had the misfortune to engage with one of the mis-influencers mentioned, this paragraph👇 rings very true:

15+ years old, but still VERY relevent — and if we had acted 15 years ago, the “better world” we’d be creating would be a LOT better & easier to reach. There are real consequences we’re just starting to see to not heeding this cartoon a lot sooner.

Even worse if we don’t heed it now. #ClimateCrisis
“What if it’s a hoax and we create a better world for nothing?”

😵‍💫Another win for the alcohol industry at the expense of people’s health.

The lobby was incredibly intense to prevent simply informing consumers on the harm alcohol use has on their health.

Extremely disappointing to see a government jettison labels at the behest of such pressure…

Ireland has officially delayed the introduction of health warning labels on alcohol from 2026 to 2028

Alcohol Action Ireland said: "Irish people are being denied their right to information regarding the facts about alcohol." @alcoholireland.ie

Interesting -🇨🇭will require disclosure➡️consumers when meat comes from animals mutilated w/o pain relief.

Ideally, these mutilations would be banned or better, not ‘necessary’ in the 1st place.

But it’s a transparency boost + much needed-consumers are poorly informed about animal welfare practices..

The list of terrible things done to farmed animals is so long, and meat/dairy/egg companies don't have to disclose them. That'll soon change in Switzerland — at least for one set of really awful practices. New story today in our Processing Meat newsletter:
A screenshot of a news story with the headline: Would this food label change how you eat? The picture for the story is of a shrink-wrapped meat package that has a sticker that reads "Warning: The cattle raised for this meat were castrated without pain relief."

New ridiculous health claim on food just dropped…

Anti-aging granola 🙃

🌱Good news buried in this article is that consumers are almost unanimously (91%) willing to try *plant * based alternatives to meat.

As the 🇩🇰 minister says, we need to enact policy levers to make that shift ‘easy and tasty’ instead of blaming.

@eu2025dk.bsky.social should have lots to share!

And this is not even a concern for most consumers, as long as the label is clear! ➡️ tinyurl.com/BEUCVeggieBu...

✍️We've written to @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu reiterating consumer groups’ position that the #GreenClaimsDirective is essential to build consumer trust in markets.

This comes after @ec.europa.eu announced on Friday that it was withdrawing the legislation.

You may claim being green or you may decide not to do it.
But customers deserve respect.
We should honour their trust and ensure a reliable information support.

😔Child obesity rates in England set to rise in *90%* of the country. Of course the areas most affected are also the most deprived.

Who can doubt that the food system is broken? And at what point does the drastic deterioration in children’s health see a policy response at the necessary scale?
emmacalvert.bsky.social
Would any parent be reassured knowing that the food industry decides what's acceptable to be advertised ▶️ their kids?

Our @beuc.eu report on EU self-regulation underlines the need to end this failed experiment.

🤳🍟Unhealthy food ads impact childhood obesity. And kids are inundated by them.

As European governments start to act to protect children, the 🇪🇺 continues to allow food companies to set their own rules.

@beuc.eu outlines in this article why this needs to stop👇

🚥 So who said the #NutriScore was over?

Fantastic news as Romania prioritises consumer interests and approves the use of the label + officially notifies it to the Commission.

Let the momentum continue 👀

Fraser Goodwin of @epha-eu.bsky.social:

Poor diets are much more than just personal choices. Highlights the report from @beuc.eu @epha-eu.bsky.social and @eurogroupforanimals.org ‘The Illusion of Choice’ - it is #foodenvironments which need changed

@beuc.eu Director @arcapde.bsky.social highlights the excoriating rise of NCDs in Europe as well as the worrying levels of childhood #obesity.

Consumers want to eat healthier and more sustainably but the #foodenvironments we live in push them in the wrong direction. Needs tackled!

Götz Brandau, LIDL, makes the point that it’s easy to point the figure at consumers but you need to make sure the offer is there for them.

Having plant based options in the product categories at the supermarket is key!

MEP @marianoichl.bsky.social ‘sets the table’ for today’s consumption panel:

The #StrategicDialogue had a clear demand for an EU Action Plan for Plant Based Foods.

It’s not about telling consumers what to eat it’s about making the healthier and more sustainable choices easier for them!

🌱Packed room at today’s event in the @europarl.europa.eu on plant based foods.

Clear interest from across the political spectrum about how the EU can move to more production *and* more consumption of #plantbased food!

Interesting figures from DG AGRI’s Laurent Mercier:

🌍Globally 40% of protein comes from animal sources
🇪🇺In Europe that figure is 60%

We need ~81g protein/per kilo of body weight but we’re consuming 121g- 50% more than required

. @beuc.eu Director @arcapde.bsky.social highlights the potential of an EU Action Plan for Plant Based Food to:

❤️ Improve Public Health
🌍 Protect the planet
💶 Create business opportunities

It can improve consumer choice + respond to their demand for healthier more sustainable food options!
