i found an interesting article for my father about the tequila i’m giving him as a gift and i put it in an envelope that i decorated to look like the one in dr. strangelove.

my partner pointed out it doesn’t have his name (or anyone else’s) on it…we’ll deal with that later.

i am late to this party but i finally sat down to watch the count of monte cristo (2024) and despite some tweaks i thought it was utterly cinematic, visually lush, and despite it lasting three hours i was almost constantly leaning forward from my perch on the couch

i'm scooting in just before the deadline of #reylogenderbend but i can tell you:

it's a modern au. there is a brawl, there is bloodshed. there is a dream, a desert, and a dragon. and it's sapphic. and i think (i hope) that it's going to surprise you a little bit along the way
a woman reclining with her face tipped up to the sky as she takes a drag of her cigarette. she's wearing what looks like a velvet suit jacket and nothing underneath - the jacket opens and you can see the arch of her collarbone. her pants are high-waisted and her feet are bare. she's outside; there are trees behind her a woman from behind, lifting her arm to comb through the back of her dark hair. she's bare-chested, and she's in a house lit low like sunset. she wears what appear to be cinched black cargo pants, and her head is tilted to the side. brushy plants blur in the foreground. The air is thick with purple shadows and the night is deep with ink; Rey's breath rattles in her trembling chest and her pulse thrums in her ears. Her small hands tighten on the hilt of her heavy blade; her arms burn with exertion and her breath comes ragged in her lungs. These are not her first steps; she has walked this road, she knows its twists and turns, and she has no path forward but to prevail. Sharp brambles pull at her booted ankles and she stumbles, the noise of skittering pebbles ever so brackish in the quiet indigo—has she given away her position? Her ears prick, but the whoosh of a ravenous scream is already descending, its cacophonous velvet mantle falling across her heaving shoulders. The creature is on her now. She writhes but its thick talons dig into her collarbone; wordless she cries out but there is only her blade to hear her, and its glittering edge once honed beneath her palm is no match for the lick of flame so hot and molten across the nape of her neck. It comes the way that violet saffron must taste: exquisitely heart-wrenching, the familiar citrus tang of defeat on her tongue, and then she is not-sand and not-ash with only a hollow pile of bones to a name that will surely be forgotten— "No," comes Poe's injured howl in her ear, his fist slamming down hard across the control panel before her. It's enough to make Rey startle but he pays no heed, grieving their mutual loss: her pitched battle, and his fifty cents. "You had her that time," he exclaims, gripping hard the frame of the old arcade and snowing dust down across the crown of Rey's head. "I know you did. I can't figure out where you went wrong—must be something in the timing. Maybe the maze? Did you miss one of the upgrades? I was getting my drink, I didn't see you tackle the...first bit?" He's snapping his fingers as if to prompt her, but Rey knows Beauty's Kingdom better than she knows the back of her hand, and she shakes her head and scuffs her palms, demurring in the face of…

If she had, she would have envisioned the experience to be soft and gentle—safe. Kylo kisses her like he goes to war. There is nothing safe about the punishing press of his mouth, or the answering rush of fire through her veins. Nothing kind about the harsh graze of his teeth, nor the dig of his fingers in her back. Just as in battle, her focus, all sensations—time itself—narrow to his skin, the scrape of fine stubble, the hard musculature of his chest against hers, the steel of his arm banded around her back. A leather-clad palm rises to envelope the side of her face, tilting her closer and allowing him more leverage to deepen his assailment of her mouth. And as always, Rey cannot keep herself from answering his challenge. She matches his movements with the same ferocity, capturing his lower lip and biting down hard until his flesh gives way. A guttural noise is pulled from deep in his throat. The iron tang of his blood feels shockingly intimate, his life’s essence coating her tongue. read if you like: Expertly-crafted emotional narratives and whipsmart political machinations that simmer with complexity in a deft hand! It’s tightly plotted and so technically impressive; it’s one of the most vast currently-ongoing WIPs, and there is no doubt in my mind that it will go down as one of the greatest Reylo fics of this era, because I believe this author is truly only testing the heights of her power. Canon is like clay in Rainy’s hands, molded and shaped with such dexterity and care. This fic hits every note it reaches for, balancing tension and innocence and suspense and ensemble dynamics at every turn. Moral Ascendancy isn’t afraid to put characters in peril or to let them hurt each other, or reckon with the consequences of their actions. Quite simply it’s a love letter to canon, penned by an incredible talent.

I gasped out loud when I realized what this fic was up to - taking the familiar line from TFA, “You imagine an ocean. I see it, I see the island,” and building out an entirely new mythology with it. In this piece Ben Solo is believed to be dead, allowing Rey the space and secret opportunity to explore her budding relationship with the merman who lives beneath the waters that surround Ahch-To. The waters become symbolic: this is a story of temptation and secrets, of long-forgotten magic and purportedly-forgotten nephews. XarisEirene unfolds it capably and beautifully, their calibre inventive and impressive as always.

And friends, let’s talk about competency and originality: XarisEirene is not afraid to put Jedi!Rey on Ajan Kloss up against a Ben who tripped and fell out of The Last Duel, quoting the Vulgate at her along the way. It’s a delight and a privilege to watch these two minds go head-to-head, unmatched in every sense - and I’ll be biting my nails to find out what happens next.

I am bound to the Light! read if you like: When two characters push each other closer and closer to the brink until one of them must topple over the very sensual and delectable edge! The power dynamics in this fic are deliciously mapped and Kylo is at his wit’s end in the very best way. This fic sets up a white-hot premise and it delivers: Aviendha69 carries the tension all the way through, never letting us forget the warm breath of their audience, the way that Rey is at Kylo’s mercy though she negotiates her way through the entire scene - letting us know so sweetly what these two are really hot for. And by the end, this piece is a blazing bonfire setting the galaxy skies alight.

She walked over; the space beyond the portal now gave a sense of depth, as the lines lengthened and became a path within. She reached out to touch the surface, that was now so smooth, as to be… Immaterial. The portal was opened. The sea snakes started squirming then swimming clockwise along the channel that framed the portal. "<See. It wanted more time. Our time.>" read if you like: One of the beautiful parts of this fic is the way that it takes a close look at the dynamic between Rey and Chewie - which is a friendship we don’t often have a close look at. It’s a unique relationship, and one with its own Reylo parallels - Chewie can communicate without words not unlike the Force bond. Maybe it’s the most natural thing in the world for a character like Chewie - someone who’s stood by the Solo family for years - to guide Ben back from the World Between Worlds. And the icing on the top of the cake is MaxxValentia’s beautiful artwork, pointing the way and evoking this emotional journey.
