Even more, the Frequency Containment Reserve - the first line of defence of the European grid after inertia - is now largely made up of batteries. They limit the grid frequency to +/- 150mHz deviation in the event of a disturbance. Something that worked perfectly on Monday.*** 11/

A power grid in transition also requires adapting regulation. Currently, policy is moving towards imposing grid forming capabilities on decentralised sources, especially for batteries. These contain a lot of buffered energy anyway. 10/

Still, that need not be a dealbreaker. Inverters contain ultrafast energy buffers called capacitors (the double horizontal bars in the diagram). In principle, we can use those to deplete. But because it's not allowed anyway, those buffers are deliberately kept as small (and cheap) as possible. 8/

Additionally, to dance as well as make music, you need some extra energy. Classical power stations get that from the rotating mass of their turbine-generator assembly. With solar panels, this is more difficult - it's hard to make the sun shine a bit harder. 7/
