In a nutshell, why we can't have nice things, and why nothing ever gets done in this country.

Ideally of course you want civil engineers who understand all the issues and have a bit of knowledge about transport planning as well as design expertise 😉

Carlton has provided some great context here! 😊

Much to parse here. First, it's part of Sketch's ongoing campaign "Poor British Motorist!" This was during the great motorway building boom. And do you know who profited from that boom? Transport minister Ernest Marples ...

This is amazing! A colleague found it in her cavity wall whilst doing some DIY. A newspaper article from the 1960s bemoaning the introduction of some 50mph speed limits. "Poor British Motorists" - some things never change, do they?!

But but but fuel is far too expensive!

This is great, both are. You don't so explicitly, but are you essentially saying that continuous footways are not the solution in the majority of cases in this country? (Until/unless major changes made to the surrounding network)

Excellent article, very thoughtful and thought-provoking. See also Robert's article (also very good) linked within.

We're pleased to report on a project that Mark has been working on with Robert Weetman for Manchester City Council.

This post sets out some ideas that developed from this work and which will hopefully start to explain what "pedestrian-friendly" is, and how we can design better side road junctions.
What makes side road junctions pedestrian-friendly?
ForewordThis post has a companion written by Robert Weetman. We have been working collaboratively on something which we think needs to be more widely known, but we also thought it might be fun and …

A crumpled old page from the Daily Sketch newspaper, dated 1963. The headline is "Have another think about it, Mr Marples!" And the story basically bleats on about how unfair it is that some experimental 50mph speed limits are being introduced. Apparently without consulting motorists. A logo saying Poor British Motorists is in the top right hand corner and implies that this sort of article is a regularly recurring theme.

Let's hope you agree with each other! 😃 Looking forward to reading both of them.

Basically, drivers seem to accept having to give/take where other motor vehicles are concerned, yet when cycles are involved they are outraged that they might need to wait or deviate.

We did have a bit of controversy a while back when contraflow cycling was permitted on some narrow one way streets. My response was to provide some examples of equally narrow streets that are two-way for all traffic, yet drivers manage to negotiate around each other.

I actually prefer to look at killed and seriously injured, rather than just fatalities. Although KSI stats can be a bit dodgy as the definition of what is "serious" varies wildly.

Why wouldn't it be ok? There are examples of contraflow cycle lanes all over the place! Or am I missing something? (Feel like death warmed up today so that's entirely possible)

"If we lose hope, we're doomed."

We must continue Dr. Jane Goodall's mission and all fight for the future of the planet.

Oh I have no idea in that case! 😂

Yes I think I saw one in my garden yesterday! (South coast) I thought it was a wren hopping about in my shrub, as it was so tiny, but it was making that funny chirpy sound.

Yeah, this park is pretty well connected, with a traffic free path from one big residential area, and a mostly traffic-free route from another. So lots of the kids cycle here, it's really nice to see.

So grateful to live somewhere that a bunch of kids that don't know each other, can turn up at a park, chuck their bikes down and just play football together, for free.
(Incidentally, anyone who says that "multicultural is a failed experiment" clearly has never seen a random group of kids play)
Photo looking down on a football pitch where a rag tag bunch of kids are playing. Bikes and jumpers chucked on the sidelines.

That sounds like when you have a 20mph with flashing lights around drop off and pick up times. The 20mph is only advisory and in my experience these are universally ignored, so they're basically pointless.

OMG my neighbour two doors up is Indian and this morning there are the most incredible smells wafting over the hedge...Damn these immigrants making my tummy rumble!!

After work rounders on the beach - what a gorgeous evening! Got to grab these moments whilst we can 😎
Photo of a sandy beach with a group of people playing rounders. The sky is beautifully blue.
