AI pushers talk about it "augmenting" capacity, but that ignores human nature. Why walk or bike, when you can drive? It's easier, so most of us do, but you get fat & lazy. AI will do the same to a lot of people's brains, I fear. Via @financialtimes.com piece on AI habits

Here's CTC-member Marples giving out prizes at a Cyclists' Touring Club event. He wasn't a transport cyclist. He and and wife toured by bicycle while at their home in France.

Let's look at some of the text in that Sketch diatribe. First off, the writer didn't think women drove. "It is time to think again, Mr Marples," wrote the journo, suggesting he consult "professional motorists" or "Men who drive for a living."

Poor British Motorist? Marples commissioned the Beeching report which smashed up Britain's rail network. He also commissioned the Buchanan Report of 1963, one of the most influential – and damaging – reports ever printed. The report was used to smother the UK in asphalt.

Marples founded (and majority owned) Marples, Ridgway and Partners, a Westminster-based roads builder. Marples was transport minister from 1959 to 1964. (He was also a touring cyclist, and first transport secretary to be a member of @cyclinguk.bsky.social, then Cyclists' Touring Club.)
