this is the worst kind of RYM page you can find if you're curious about getting into a band. I don't want to see 6 albums and they're all equally popular and equally well-regarded, I want to see 2 3.8/5's and a bunch of clunkers I can skip!

that's 31 games played in 2025, minus a couple dozen doom wads and some multiplayer-only stuff I probably forgot about and several Archipelago playthroughs. far above my historical average of, like, 2.

4/5 stars I liked this a lot better than other Arkane fans did. I think Prey (2017) is still my high-water mark but I had a comparatively good time as I did with the Dishonored games with which I started the year. The art direction, music, and level design are just excellent. Peak Arkane. My biggest gripes were a few softlocks early on caused by opening a menu (???) and the protagonist's monologues and dialogue, which I would say were somewhere between David Chase tweets and I'm-talking-to-a-cuff. The narrative itself was fairly unremarkable but I did enjoy uncovering it. I've seen some complaints about backtracking but I had no problem with it. It's mostly optional to get upgrades to your abilities and I really enjoyed the feeling of learning the 4 maps and mastering their traversal. I support creative asset reuse like this both on its own merits and to stave off the unsustainable growth of game budgets. I realize this is a self-imposed problem I could overcome by changing my own behavior, but Deathloop straight-up not having a quicksave feature meant I played it significantly more honestly than any other Arkane game. Minute-to-minute I was surprised and experimentative and improvisational! A few times the game would put new traps in familiar areas and I fell for it nearly every time. Deathloop is a tutorial on how to play imsims without optimizing the fun out of it.

The genesis of the scene in which Frankenstein's assistant Fritz drops a jar labeled "normal brain" and replaces it with a brain in a jar labeled "abnormal brain" is believed to be based on the fate of Walt Whitman's brain at the American Anthropometric Society. Whitman had donated his brain after his death to the society for analysis to correlate intelligence with brain size.[74] A 1907 paper by Edward Anthony Spitzka on the society's brain collection caused a minor sensation when it revealed that Whitman's brain had been accidentally destroyed when a "careless assistant" dropped the jar it was stored in.[75] This story element was not present in the original 1818 Mary Shelley novel.[74]
