After 48 hours of torture, Dr. Christie wrote a forced confession - “the best thing I ever wrote,” he later told the BBC, noting that he had made sure the confession included “all my recommendations to the African National Congress” about the best way to sabotage Koeberg and other facilities.

“And, gloriously, the judge read it out in court,” Dr. Christie added. “So my recommendations went from the judge’s mouth” straight to the A.N.C.

Two years later, in December 1982, Korberg was bombed by white A.N.C. operatives who had gotten jobs at the facility. They followed Dr. Christie’s instructions to the letter.

I liked this a lot better than other Arkane fans did. I think Prey (2017) is still my high-water mark but I had a comparatively good time as I did with the Dishonored games with which I started the year.

The art direction, music, and level design are just excellent. Peak Arkane. My biggest gripes were a few softlocks early on caused by opening a menu (???) and the protagonist's monologues and dialogue, which I would say were somewhere between David Chase tweets and I'm-talking-to-a-cuff. The narrative itself was fairly unremarkable but I did enjoy uncovering it.

I've seen some complaints about backtracking but I had no problem with it. It's mostly optional to get upgrades to your abilities and I really enjoyed the feeling of learning the 4 maps and mastering their traversal. I support creative asset reuse like this both on its own merits and to stave off the unsustainable growth of game budgets.

I realize this is a self-imposed problem I could overcome by changing my own behavior, but Deathloop straight-up not having a quicksave feature meant I played it significantly more honestly than any other Arkane game. Minute-to-minute I was surprised and experimentative and improvisational! A few times the game would put new traps in familiar areas and I fell for it nearly every time. Deathloop is a tutorial on how to play imsims without optimizing the fun out of it.
