That is why I am so concerned about the selection of an institute director based on his connection with JD Vance and with the current "searches" for 12 institute and center directors with no known search committees. All interested parties should be tracking this closely.

HOWEVER, my comfort level changes if IC directors are not selected carefully, without political considerations. Encouraging or forcing IC directors to prioritize funding decisions based on political as opposed to scientific & portfolio-based criteria is deeply concerning.

As the memo goes on to discuss, this should be done transparently. In my view, best practices also including having program officers present their plans in front of their colleagues to minimize the risks of favoritism and promote uniformity in execution.

Having been an institute director, I agree with this approach. Peer review scores & comments are key. But, NIH staff (and advisory councils) have information of how much the institute is investing in a given area and some well-scoring applications should be deprioritized.

What can you do? Speak out on social media, on local news, TV&radio— you can do that in your personal capacity. They did it by a series of Fri. night news dumps [&having an impossibly short deadline for submission of apps, as if they had predetermined candidates].

Curing cancer is hard! We don’t want political hires, we want to rely on the best scientists as judged by the scientific community, as judged by peers and experts. That’s the way we do good science.

These timelines are absurd & wanting to take on one of these positions under the present circumstances is problematic, but NIH needs qualified applicants to apply. Please consider applying, even if you are unsure you would accept the position if offered.
