🤔 What kind of Pre-K experience sets students up for long-term success?

Our new working paper offers important new evidence to help answer this question!

And 🧵👇
A screenshot of the abstract of the working paper Figure 1: School Enrollment Pathways for Lottery Winners and Control Group Students through 8th Grade. This figure represents school enrollment pathways across different school types (BPS, BPS Exam School, non-BPS district school, charter school, and other) for both lottery winners and the control group. The thickness of the lines represents the percentage of lottery winners/control group students that are enrolled in each type of school. Blue lines show the pathways taken by lottery winners, and BPS-specific school categories are highlighted in the light blue boxes. BPS = Boston Public Schools.

A new summary from the Urban Institute documents the benefits of DC’s #wage enhancement program for early childhood educators – the Early Childhood Educator Pay #Equity Fund – for educator retention in #childcare centers, especially centers accepting child care subsidies. urbn.is/DCFundWage
Figure 1 shows Movement within and out of DC's center-based child care educator workforce, March 2023 to March 2024. At the top, a green shades shows the Newly employed in DC child care centers (679). From left to right in the middle, a blue shade shows Employed in a DC child care center, March 2023 (3,226), Remained at same center (2,057), and Employed in a DC child care center, March 2024 (2,999). Under the blue section, there is a gray section that lists Switched centers (267). At the bottom, a yellow/gold shade lists Left DC child care centers (902). The source is Urban Institute analysis of Division of Early Learning Licensing Tool (DELLT) data. Notes read that based on 3,905 unique educators observed across both time points. We used hire and separation dates included in the DELLT data to determine employment as of March 1st each year. We also used an educator's presence in one file but not another file to determine departure and/or new employment. Note that 64 educators that left DC child care were employed in a facility that had closed by March 1, 2024, signaling a potential layoff. The Urban Institute is listed in blue and black in the bottom right-hand corner.

Another great resource: the Segregation Tracking Project. We built off NCES data to create Longitudinal Imputed School Database. Race/eth and free lunch data for every school in the US 1991-2022. We impute erroneous/missing data but retain original CCD values.

New @urbaninstitute.bsky.social research shows that federal programs being discussed for cuts spend a disproportionate share of their funds on children.

Cuts could massively increase childhood poverty, reduce access to healthcare, & worsen educational outcomes www.urban.org/urban-wire/h...

Sometimes researchers are lucky enough to study solutions.

Our work on DC's Early Childhood Educator Pay Equity Fund is 2 years in the making and findings are clear.

We know now what a big change it has brought to people's lives. It was long overdue.

How D.C. tackled a child care crunch through a tax hike on the rich
In Washington, D.C., a tax on residents earning more than $250,000 a year is boosting the wages of child care workers. Two years in, it's proving to be a great investment.
