... This is not to say that Criterion et al shouldn't strive for historical accuracy. They should. But it is to say that in some cases there is a range of accuracy. And in this case, both versions likely fall within that range.

... We also tend not to notice these differences. Our eyes adjust. The differences only stand out when placed side by side. We see orange as white or blue as white depending on the context. (Remember "the dress"?)...

... I remember a few years ago a 1970s French film was released to DVD and it looked very blue. The original print also looked blue, but that was because it was designed for French theaters, which at the time used more orangey bulbs in their projectors. It was a kind of pre-emphasis...

... And I'm not just talking about aspect ratios or surround sound configurations. I'm also talking about color. Projection bulbs are supposed to be uniform, but they often aren't. The temperatures differ from theater to theater...
