I credit flying a lot as a kid - looking out the window with my strength in looking at satellite data and topographic maps and being able to spot things others can’t, or seeing the landforms and weathering patterns. Still do it on every flight!

Many sea stars begin life as young fairy-like creature (called a brachiolaria) that float through the open ocean. Eventually, a small star forms within them (here in yellow). The fairy-like brachiolaria sinks under the star’s weight, and the star pops out!

One of my favorite Folk songs that Johann does… a Scott’s Gaelic ballad/lullaby usually heard on bag pipes… it’s also been performed as a lament at funerals/remembrances for Queens, Prime Ministers & Presidents. #folkmusic #gaelic #Scotland

Johann and the Dirty Blue Shirts performing the Dead Horse Ceremony at CT Sea Music Festival.

Beginning to feel a lot like those sailors these days, between expenses going up (largely greed & corruption) & services going down... feels like I work ¾ of the year before I make any money "for me"

I have deep respect and love for my dad - a wonderful influence & supporter. He's also an award winning nature photographer. Whenever I go out with him, I learn a ton! "It's the photographer, not the gear that makes the image". He's making most of us missing peak color, but he got a lot keepers.
My father getting a good shot of Branch Brook in Vermont, running at normal levels after some fall flooding. We missed peak color, but he got some amazing shots. Technically on point all the way, and his eye is well trained to find the "winning image" in many situations that are non-optimal. The secret to being a good nature photographer or photojournalist: "Have your gear and yourself ready to capture what is happening, then, if you have time, find that special shot nd take your time to nail it."

USGS scientists tell us about the effects of invasive species & climate change. Yet their fate, like many other federal employees who work in science & the environment, is unknown. My latest for @nrdc.org. Thank you to @meadekrosby.bsky.social, John Organ, Ed Arnett, and others for speaking with me.
The Attacks on Science Continue—This Time at the USGS
From sea level rise to bee populations, the agency’s wildlife and climate programs shed light on the world around us.

2 batches of blackberry/raspberry jam from last berries(?) out of the garden. Used two thickeners on left added pectin, on right small amount of tapioca flour. 1.5 quarts of each. Flavor pre canning on each was very good and I couldn’t tell difference from flavor.

Oh, they didn’t. I mean Sen. Kennedy is such a caricature - Yale educated lawyer… Suuuuuuuurrrreee he sounds like that. Accent, yeah, I’m sure but the “Now I’m just a country bumpkin lawyer, not a high falutin Ivy League Lawyer” total affectation.

Time for some recipe testing. Same weight/mix of berries. Same amount of sugar and lemon juice (my normal recipe for mixed berries) back one using gelatin, front one with use tapioca as thickener. No thickener I got close to what I wanted, but… lost a lot of volume cooking it down.

But of course. Like almost all human behaviors these days - according to one brand of hypocritical (mostly)white men at least.

So funny, I am a military brat (and former active) so grew up all around the world and US. I code switch regularly between accents often without realizing it. Talking to someone with a Texas accent - on comes that hillcountry accent, same for Alabama, VA, NM, AZ, PacNW, Hillcountry Germanic English.

Cleaning and archiving old projects - came across this one I had forgotten about. Used in a UN/UNESCO report and presentation about invasive species and biofouling on ocean installed energy structures. Twas quite fun modeling out the various structures. 🐡
Illustration of different types of submerged structures of offshore renewable energy systems. A) wind power:(L-R) Substation Gravity pylon, Monopile, jacket, spar, semi-submersible and tension leg. Each support type has limits and optimal depths of deployment, and different potential refugia for invasive specis and biofouling.
B) Wave and tidal generators - (L-R) Wave generators, Submerged tidal power generators, emerged tidal generators at differing deployment phases
