Following on from my earlier thread about claims of “bias” in universities (link below 👇), I was struck by James Marriott’s column in today’s Times. It’s full of anecdote & caricature. The real story of UK universities is structural, financial, and political. 🧵

Listening to Rest is Politics, Rest is Politics US, and reading respected commentators, it's striking how 'left-wing bias' in universities is now taken for granted. That matters, especially in the US, where academia faces political attack. Thoughts from having worked in US/UK universities. 🧵

It's worth noting that these are not merely stupid questions, but have the function - as does much of the professional and academic ethics industry - of taking up up space for serious discussion of politics and value with speculative, sci-fi bollocks.

Yes, this one feels more independent. Thanks again Juliet.
A small comic zone of Juliet Fall’s author meets critics session at RGS-IBG. Comic is balanced on the front basket of a bicycle in Edinburgh.

True, it only hints of/at your commentary.

Yep. Perfect. Just need to adjust the printer margins to 0.0. Here’s my copy to take home.

Yep. Perfect! Thanks Juliet.

Wonderful. I'm not at RGS-IBG this year. Might you consider a stayed-at-home copy? If so, a link to higher res copy. BSky seems to reduce the resolution.

What a delightful contrast to the academic publisher’s often bland books. Can you reveal a little more about its design and production?

So nicely designed and thought out. Perfect for reading and writing and looking at stacked timber. Do they serve fresh berries for snacks too?

It was only in doing our final revisions for the journal that we realised how relevant Gail Jefferson’s classic paper on ‘Laughter in the pursuit of intimacy’ might be. Not so much because of the laughter from staff and customers, more the pursuit of sharing who they are.
