On Oct. 1st NPR and public media lost its federal funding. But, we still here!

I read the other day that 25% of Virginia’s power is now going to data centers — amazing stuff

This is my regular reminder to everyone that jstor is open to the general public now; a free account there will give you access to 100 papers a year.

regrettably if you try to point this out online you'll get yelled out by 79208 journalists going OH SO YOU WANT JOURNALISTS TO STARVE??? even if you're, say, a journalist yourself, and point out that while there are clearly no easy answers, the status quo isn't exactly working for society

highlight of the day: overhearing @ericm.cd having to explain what "being 'feral' for something" means to someone else in the newsroom

[The way I can think to put it: I'm past the point in my life where I can't imagine what he'd say to me. My life is so different now.]

^ that second post should read "can't", obviously.

But I feel my own loss very keenly today — a birthday that I once, even in the years right after his death, had trouble remembering.
ericm.cd
My grief has always felt so selfish to me — so much of how I miss him and miss others is about how my own life would be different.

Imagining the experiences and feeling he has and will continue to miss, it is too vast to inhabit.
ericm.cd
What would it have been like to witness his giant body age, his mind? How would I be different? How would my family?
ericm.cd
I also think about the ways in which I didn't know him and won't. The way all of our parents are different to us at different times in our lives. All the ways we are different selves, and then all the ways they are, too.
ericm.cd
The world, too, is different. Of course — it was always going to be but even in March of 2016 it was hard to imagine how.

He would, inevitably, individually, have thought differently about it then me, seen it from a different angle, and known enough about both of us to explain it from his vantage.

I'm married, I feel professionally fulfilled and successful.

In this decade, I've also let important an relationship atrophy because I didn't have the emotional skills to handle it or know how to learn them.

I can't help but feel he could have told me how to rebuild.

Today, it feels worse than it did a few years ago — which isn't what I would have expected.

The way I can think to put it: I'm past the point in my life where I can imagine what he'd say to me. My life is so different now.

It's been nearly ten years since my step-dad died. October 2nd was his birthday. He would be 63 today, a fact that I had to look up.

Grief, nine years on, is an interesting thing.
