To be clear, it’s good that more affluent states pay more to help subsidize federal programs in poorer states. But that bargain is based on the idea that the whole country is broadly in it together. If the feds are just going to take your money and brutalize your citizens, the bargain crumbles.

The line was "The world will be destroyed, it will merely change," and is apparently from an anime called Blue Submarine No. 6 that aired on Cartoon Network in November 2000.
Hilariously, at the moment the character is saying this, he's getting real handsy with some kind of dryad lady tree...

On the one hand, I hate Universes Beyond and I have no attachment to Avatar the Last Airbender. On the other hand, I wrote a dissertation about shrines and there was once a Facebook group with over 100 members in it devoted to questioning whether I was actually a giant panda. I’m not made of stone!

Happy to announce my essay "The Whisper in Baldr's Ear" has been accepted for publication by @pleiadesmag.bsky.social! It's a memoir about my child's birth at 29 weeks and a meditation on the Norse myth of Baldr's death, and I'm thrilled to see it in Pleiades's pages. More to come!
