Trump started the current tariff threats, that re-consideration of the US Steel supplier went out the window, again. And this time permanently. The steel that would have normally been purchased over the next 10 years from the US Steel maker has resurrected and sustained a Canadian supplier.

They asked for the steel to be sourced in Canada. Several Canadian steel makers were approached and one of them agreed to re-start production; this Canadian steel maker had been dormant and was looking for a large “anchor” order to re-start production. The order with the US supplier

When President Trump won his first term he immediately started making noise about tariffs and ripping up the NAFTA agreement. The infrastructure clients got spooked and said the uncertainty created by President Trump’s threats created too much project risk.

The company does not export any of these infrastructure products to the US. But for 30+ years this company bought the steel for these projects from a US Steel maker because the US supplier was\is an excellent company and the steel itself was so specialized: it wasn’t produced anywhere in Canada.

To summarize:

-They stopped almost all USAID work

-Then they conceded that some programs actually saved lives & granted waivers for those

-Then they promised a “careful” 90 day review of everything

-Then they cancelled 90% anyway within just weeks, including many they had just deemed life-saving
