Advocates of higher ed did heroic work rallying against this monstrous bill, but its passage was probably preordained. It's custom-made for today's Republican Party. It centralizes power in the executive; undermines education and critical thinking; censors speech; and attacks imaginary wokeness.
Texas legislators just passed a bill that
gives politically-appointed regents control over faculty curriculum, hiring, & governance. It does what they accuse academics of doing: privileging ideas, biases, & agendas on political grounds, & silencing those that do not follow their ideology.
Political appointees would have more control over Texas universities’ courses and hiring under bill OK’d by House
Senate Bill 37 would give more power to university regents, who are appointed by the governor, to vet and veto new curricula and administrators.

$200k from Mellon to each of the humanities councils that lost funding from NEH (which is mandated funding in the NEH legislation). It's one time and won't fill the budget hole, but v good to see.
Breaking News: The Mellon Foundation announced $15 million to support state humanities councils after federal aid cancellations left some in danger of collapse. The endowment provides crucial support to museums, historical sites, cultural festivals and community projects.
Mellon Foundation Announces $15 Million for Humanities Councils
The emergency funding came after the National Endowment for the Humanities canceled most existing grants, part of a pivot toward President Trump’s priorities.

If you let the executive deport people to a foreign gulag just by pronouncing the word “terrorism,” then expect to be called a “terrorist” soon yourself.

US universities must not obey Trump and Musk in advance
At the very least, they should hold out until the administration works out how to enforce its crackdowns on DEI and research, says Johann Neem

A fantastic, must-read article!

The history of expatriation in the early US is relevant in other ways as well, specifically as it relates to border crossing. The right to expatriation often included the belief that crossing borders entitled people to citizenship in the nation of their choice.

I don't think that there has been any press coverage of the matter yet, but a recent lawsuit in Texas History has huge implications for academic freedom, free speech more broadly, and disciplinary associations. /1
