A change in the depiction of drinking habits should be because of national goals and not of stresses around how Korea is seen internationally.

The presence and normalization of these drinking habits in dramas may increase the viewers participation in these behaviours. But still the k-dramas are made by koreans for koreans, so the drama does not have to change just because of the international audience.

Many K-dramas depict the drinking culture of South Korea and alcohol is often a key part of the advertising and funding of the dramas. In other countries drinking could be more frowned upon and the korean depictions may influence international viewers.

When looking at why the hip hop genre in east asian countries may start discussions around cultural appropriation, we can see that it is because of the history and cultural background is prominent in the genre.

When pop is more genre neutral it becomes harder to identify or pin point when it becomes appropriation. Appropriation in pop may appear when it borrows specific cultural elements.

The reason why the conversation appears most in relation to hip hop is because the genre has deep cultural roots and is politically charged.
Meanwhile pop as a genre has no spesific cultural origin and is a blend or a fusion of multiple cultures.

The difference between ideas of mangas and comics around the world come from how cultures have treated the media. Like how they have framed and marketed the media from their release. And this has created a big difference of how comics and mangas may be percieved by western cultural critics. #manga

Luckily this idea that manga and comics are for children is fading, and these visual medias is becoming more and more popular globally. Like the mangas Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan have been very successful and have gained a global audience.

There are also problems with context in translations. Non korean speaking fans of Hallyu may recieve filtered information through translation. This may make foreign fans miss out on the public discourse of things like misogyny and prevent recognition of societal issues.
November 13, 2025 at 2:45 AM
Hallyu, like K-dramas, often shows a idealized world and if they display societal issues it is not really confronting the realities of misogyny within Korean society. It may create this fantasy space of Korean society and make it seem as misogyny is less pervasive.

It is heartbreaking to think about all the people who have been through similar situation, which most likely a lot of people have, and that many people in the world still struggle with accepting their feelings as well as being accepted by the society around them.

Seeing how the characters in the movie struggled to
reconcile their feelings with external pressures made me more aware of the privilege of living in a time and place where LGBTQ+ identities are more visible and supported.

The film shows how societal expectations, religion, and homophobia can shape and limit personal freedom. Watching A-han and Birdy’s relationship unfold, I learned that love can be both an act of resistance and a path toward self-acceptance.
