We're *so* close to some students spending more time to have AI do their work, then use AI to make it not seem like AI and then have AI check it ... all taking more time and money than, you know, doing that actual work.

To avoid accusations of AI cheating, college students are turning to AI
Students are taking new measures, such as dumbing down their work, spying on themselves and using AI “humanizer” programs, to beat accusations of cheating with artificial intelligence.

One last blast for the PM crowd: Eruptions is back! I have resurrected my blog and I will start (mostly) regularly updating with volcano news, research and culture. Check it out: eruptions.site/2026/01/28/w...
Welcome back to Eruptions
So, it has been awhile, right? Over the past few years, there have been a lot of changes to my volcano communication world. Scientists moved from Twitter to Bluesky. People decided they wanted podc…

Remember Shatner made a movie in Esperanto to try to get people to take up the "language"? That's what Aranofsky's AI films will look like in history.

Like a latter-day Dr. Frankenstein, I have revived my Eruptions blog from beyond the grave. My hope is that it doesn't wreak havoc, but instead returns me to writing about volcanoes regularly. You should check it out! eruptions.site/2026/01/28/w...

Eruptions is back ... and by back, I mean a return to blogging. Back in 2008, I started Eruptions to write about volcanoes as they happen, talk about volcano culture and research. Now I want to go back to that free-wheeling format. Welcome to eruptions.site: eruptions.site/2026/01/28/w...

So, you all might have wondered why it has been 2 months since the last newsletter. Mostly, I was disenchanted with the newsletter format and with the world today, it was hard to be inspired to write in such a fashion. It took a lot of work and time to write each newsletter. (1/x)

May I interrupt the nonstop tidal wave of doom with a tidal wave of LAVA?

They're as high as a skyscraper, ooze at the speed of a human sprinter, and are really, really hot.

By me for @science.org, reported from the #RockyWorlds4 conference: 🔭🧪
Tidal waves of lava may slosh around alien worlds
Waves of molten rock could be confounding observations of atmospheres on distant planets

As we hit Day 3 of cancelled school here in Granville, I have taken to calling it "Snovid". There is a lot of PTSD to these extended cancellations for us parents of kids of a certain age.

You totally get the feeling that Punxsutawney Phil is going to see the world today and just say "screw this" as he blasts off into space.

Whenever I teach Earth Resources, I track metal prices much more closely. If you aren't me, you might be surprised to know that we are very, very close to breaking $5000/oz gold and we just broke $100/oz silver. For comparison, the last time I taught this only 2 years ago, gold was ~$2500/oz.

Revised: this Lego cube (1.5x1.5x1.5 cm) would be worth ~$11,114 if it was made of pure gold based on today's prices ($4,910/oz).
