Putting hard numbers to any kind of memory is a surefire way to immediately age a science fiction story

The year I got a heavyweight Brazilian beyblade bootleg for Christmas was the year I got a proper beyblade arena for my birthday because my mum didn't like that it was scratching the cake tins

They who have not veered into the cultural history(?) of circumcision on their own already tangential thread may cast the first stone

Re: other weird authors-I've never found anyone who does it like Mieville but I think Le Guin's short fiction (eg. Dreams Must Explain Themselves) stretches my brain in similar ways, and Italo Calvino, particularly Invisible Cities and If On A Winter's Night A Traveller have some of that juice too

On bowed instruments it means the player should stop the bow on the string, but continue bowing in the same direction for the subsequent notes in the slur. Other instruments just gotta vibe it out though

Not every day I find a thread of Mieville-reading sickos (laudatory) so I have to ask: does anyone else think this sounds a lot like the jungle track Mieville described in King Rat?

I've read Railsea! Basically the reason I'm reading Moby Dick now. To the best of my knowledge I've read all of Mieville's fiction except for Un Lun Dun and those two Bas Lag novels hahah

Unsurprisingly, sounds right up my alley. I'm working through Moby Dick and then my reading schedule is pretty clear...

No, just some of the short fiction that's also set there. I imagine they're as good though?

Perdido Street Station had a similar feeling to me! The plot was weaved into such a rich world I could have happily continued on any of the detours taken

Especially as livestreaming continues to be a major source of marketing for games. 'Fun to play' and 'fun to watch someone else play' can be subtly different, imo

The people who only read self help act like it’s Plato when the only difference between them abs a romance reader is that the romance reader knows it’s self indulgent fiction

there is a transition into management where you go from 'executing tasks with outcomes' to 'managing the people who do that' or even 'managing the people who manage the people'. The more abstracted you are from the bottom the more LLMs *look like* what the people who report to you do, imo
