I've been really cutting down on drinking since the start of the year (and as I've been trying to exercise a bit more), and finding that it's harder to maintain some friendships since a lot of social activities have centered around grabbing beers.

This realization has been a bit isolating.

On Thursday evening, I'll be joining a panel of local community leaders at the NYU Game Center for a wide-ranging discussion about NYC's homegrown indie game scene. The host and moderator is @timrattray.bsky.social, who's working on a docuseries all about the NYC game dev community.

Yeah totally!

I think frustration as a core design is totally feasible and can be very powerful (clearly). But so much of the success of that intention hinges on clearly setting up the player to expect frustration, so that they understand in some way they’re actually “failing correctly” lol
essaygames.bsky.social
In other words frustration without relief, failure without success, doesn’t build tension. It just instills anxiety.

But I honestly don’t mean to dump on “unfair-likes” or w/e. Just not an inspiring design principle for me…
essaygames.bsky.social
Absolutely! I totally agree.

In fact frustration and relief are core components of my most recent game. Managing stress and emotional duress can absolutely be compelling design.

But idk about celebrating designed anguish…

Truly.

If my current Steam sales are indication then I fear you’re absolutely correct.

I know this post is likely made in jest, but game design with the intended purpose of making people, children even, cry in frustration sounds like… bad?

My first #LudumDare! Random Walk is inspired by @hthrflwrs.bsky.social’s Unfair Flips and in playtesting it made a child cry in frustration. Try it out! #GameDev #IndieDev #GodotEngine nuzcraft.itch.io/random-walk
Confused hero on a path. On the left it show confusion % plus buttons to upgrade think time, reduce confusion, increase multiplier and increase step value. On the right is a log of resets and a success

hey, actually, fuck off with this nonsense.

I’d love to try for a half eventually! But training is such a big time commitment that idk if I can swing with family obligations rn.

Did my typical morning run around the neighborhood that’s usually about 4.2m and felt like I could’ve gone for another mile or so.

Trying to inch toward 10K before it gets too cold.

Listen, we are carry weights and burdens in our day to day…

… but the looming flu shot / COVID booster Walgreens visit with my family about to commence has been like a freight truck on my shoulders all day.

Late to school, needed to go home and get a comfort hoodie, but maybe it was worth it...?

Trying to bear in mind that moments like this don't really matter and that the important thing is that our kiddo feels heard and comfortable and understood.

hope it helped.

Wow… Adams is out.

I can only image what the campaign office must’ve been like.

It’s my youngest kiddos birthday. It’s wild to think he’s been keeping me up and squealing from endless tickles for 3 whole years.

Happy bday buddy.

Absolutely agree with this take.

Also fun fact: Fay Jones, the artist of Stasis, the only card she painted, was the aunt of Richard Garfield.
gavadon.bsky.social
I will take a million of "whatever the fuck is going on in the Stasis card art" over any Spiderman, Star Trek or Sephiroth in Magic the Gathering.

This shit used to be cool and weird!
Stasis MTG card. a fucking mime? and a coyote man on a seasaw with an easel in the middle. COME THE FUCK ON! Hang it in the Louvre!!!

I forgot that game dev is a long and kind of tedious process and that even in prototyping I get hung up on small details all the time...

Just spent most of the morning making geometry of a ruined house roof, but haven't spent time mapping out where it'd go in a level.
