I can't take all the credit - this article created a bit of discussion when it first came out in September. And it's just stuck with me because the subject of shame seems to keep coming up.

At one time, being divorced was an absolute bar to running for president. (See Nelson Rockefeller vying for the GOP nomination in 1964.) Now, there is absolutely no behavior that would disqualify you.

We used to have widely agreed upon examples of shameful behavior: having a child out of wedlock, getting divorced. They weren’t always fair obviously. But what’s considered shameful personally shameful behavior today? People use the f-word all the time. When I was a kid, you didn’t do that.

Interesting article in The New Republic about our societal lack of shame. "You cannot shame people who no longer recognize the legitimacy of shared norms." newrepublic.com/article/2015...
Why Shame No Longer Works in American Politics
While it once played a role in binding society, shame has lost its power—and so have the liberal tools that depend on it.

I spent a week in Minneapolis-St. Paul in November. I went to several museums, toured the state Capitol, had dinner with friends at terrific restaurants. Every place I went was packed with people enjoying themselves. Just to state the obvious, Minnesota is the furthest thing from a "hellhole."

We gotta cut it out with this “you should vote as a civic duty, it doesn’t matter who you vote for” shit. If you can’t do the bare minimum to inform yourself as a citizen of the richest democracy in human history then maybe stay the fuck home

Maybe it's for the people who missed seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman, Andrew Garfield and Linda Emond?

I love apple pie, especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. But it can be tough to get right. The apple slices can’t be too hard. The filling can’t be too syrupy. Peach, pumpkin, blueberry are also good. Pecan tends to be too sweet. Only flavors I don’t like are cherry and rhubarb.

It seems incredible that he could just do that. Isn't the right to a jury trial in the Magna Carta?

Have you read The Man Who Died Seven Times? It was published in Japan in 1995 and just translated. It's about a teenager who keeps reliving the day his grandfather is killed. Clever, kind of like Groundhog Day.

I'm waiting for my library reserve on What We Can Know. I've read all the praise for Buckeye, so I may read it. The only one I've read is The Director, by Daniel Kehlmann, which I really liked.
