Unfocused Warcraft rambling.
The newer art is seriously allergic to texture detail. Example I always use are the new DF drake models that have such flat textures for their bodies they look like they have leather instead of scales.

Housing stuff is all bulbous and rounded and my mind keeps seeing SMC as Red Valdrakken.

WoW sorta feels in this state where they hired roleplayers to write it but not especially good ones, the kinds who just want comfy coffee shop AUs and their greatest aspiration for each race is "I hope they overcome their problems and be normal"

honestly barring a creative reset I don't see this direction under this team lasting much longer barring Knife getting fast-tracked to a narrative lead position since they seem like only one of the only writers that's both competent and actually enjoys the same world the players do

The "no negativity in the dojo" interview is from 2019 and I think it's metastasized. This is supposed to be a story of a living world but it feels like we're always 5 pages away from the happy ending of an AU fanfic and every expac is them delaying it by another 5 pages.

I don't know about Metzen's storytelling anymore, but the whole Green Jesus thing feels so quaint compard to how blatantly obsessed his successors are with a select few characters and races. As you said, they act like they're still fans writing AO3 fics instead of professional writers.

Sean Copeland's wife tweeting right before Blizzcon 2023 that "previous [story heads after Metzen] steered towards their faves and the story they wanted" feels like the most direct confirmation we'll get of this. The response itself is, as ever, the writers looking at BfA and having convulsions.

Twitlonger is so apt because count how many times in Midnight a character spews out like 3-4 paragraphs overexplaining any belief or opinion they have. Everyone talks like they're in an HR workplace conduct training video.

That's what kills me the most, is that the new stories are simultaneously so terrible while the writing is at times directly begging you to agree with them that the old stuff is bad and icky and the new must be embraced.

You can 100% feel the game's identity hurtling off a cliff after Metzen, Neilson, and Kosak all left in 2016. The disrespect for the existing canon is so strong they're even handicapping their ability to tell their own stories because they have to keep making up new stuff instead of using the old.

I am getting this impression all over the game lately, honestly. Everywhere is this pervasive sense that a crew has co-opted the game and its races and aesthetics and have supplanted it all with their OCs. Void Elves to start, dracthyr, haranir, all of Shadowlands. Identity subversion everywhere.

I truly think a lot of what's happening with Horde races being so fervently anti-dark magic of all kinds resulting in this thematic swap between the factions is that, as part of the eternal BfA atonement we're stuck in, the Horde must never embrace anything remotely dubious or wicked.

Eitrigg has the same effect in the Red Dawn story. They're trying to add some kind of digital growl to the orc voices but it's so tuned up they sound like cyborgs.

It's a perpetual narrative dead end machine. Every character here has the exact same story of being tired and sleepy and wanting to just take a break. Stick 80% of your cast in a retirement home and your game begins to feel like one, too.
January 24, 2026 at 5:15 PM
You can draw point 2 out to how they've handled writing as a whole since the BfA/SL backlash. They're still terrified of making players upset, even if the inaction and half-measures caused by that fear make players upset anyways. They blew up Dalaran and nobody really cares in-game outside Alleria.
January 24, 2026 at 7:00 AM
I think it can be simply summed up as

1) A very obvious favoring of Alliance races and characters right now that sees them vacuuming up all stories and themes
2) When the Horde does appear, they have to be apologetic and very honor/good-focused because we're trapped in eternal BfA atonement

We're at an extreme end of the spectrum where anything and everything established in the world is fodder for whatever story the writers want to construct for a given character. Instead of informing and supporting possible stories, the world is seen as a hindrance at best to be discarded when needed.
January 19, 2026 at 3:56 PM
The world feels so tiny when the designated protagonists are literally bullying everyone else out of the way so they can take center stage. This is something they've called attention to themselves but they treat it like an endearing character flaw instead of a massive writing issue!
January 19, 2026 at 3:52 PM
Beyond the surface level view of that, it's because only Alleria is allowed to have Dalaran as motivation. Only Alleria is meant to feel anger and retributive feelings towards Xal'atath, everyone else will defend themselves but doesn't really care all that much?

Seeing how wide and stretched out SMC is, presumably to support skyriding, is what's made me slowly sour on the latter. The wide open space design will make more sense for Northrend, but it's hard not to feel like we've lost denser spaces and outdoor microdungeons as a result.
January 19, 2026 at 1:20 PM
Questing is begging for some sort of overhaul to receive this level of attention again. They seem to view it as an almost entirely optional story component now, with the bare minimum needed for leveling and to present a story. They see people praise the side quests without understanding why.

Core memory unlocked of people making all the comic edits like her dad asking for gas or the dominion rod

Seeing people say the egregious typos and poor English in the Tempest Keep weapon plaques will be fixed since it's just a beta as I play 10 year old Legion content that still has blatant typos in it
January 12, 2026 at 7:06 PM
Increasingly difficult to reconcile that there's like two writers on the team that genuinely seem to enjoy the setting and everyone else have the maturity and propensity towards working together of 8 year olds trying to convince you the new toy they got last week is cooler than yours (you are 30+)
January 7, 2026 at 5:35 AM
Very bold of them to put the dungeon content done by SC adjacent to the open world quest likely done by knife. About as coughing baby vs hydrogen bomb as you can get
