Wow. The only criticism I have is that it took me the first 30 minutes of the movie to acclimate to Benedict Cumberbatch in the role, but he got there. Genuinely brilliant, so much imagery and symbolism to capture the eye and such a slow burn. Masterwork of an ending.

Gorgeous, horrifically patient. Set dressing for a gut punch at the end but what incredible set dressing. The beginning of faith or the end of belief? Really liked it.

Women and Children First here in Chicago, was the first bookstore I ever fell in love with almost a decade ago, and they've been there for me through so many evolutions in critical thought and joy. 47 years of history and counting!

I’ll also put links to some things I listened to/read for different perspectives

Gonna take me a bit to write some thoughts down, but one hell of a movie.
I’m not sold on every single swing the movie takes/how every character is written, but it has some sharp commentary, great performances, and is just a damn great, blockbuster-ass flick.

I know this is a divisive one (and true, I put it down after 200 or so pages a few years ago) but it’s such a worthwhile read. It’s unafraid to challenge you, to repulse you. Ultimately, it rewards those who stick with it.

My elevator pitch on this movie would be, “What if Forrest Gump was worthy of discussion?”
Beautifully expressive (and sometimes messy) cinematography, a great Joel Edgerton performance, and an interesting meditation on purpose, grief, and guilt.

The central essay here, “The Act of Hating”, has completely changed my view on the idea of hate, and has justified every time I’ve heard someone say why we can’t just have love and get along.
Her six general rules to follow in how to hate are genuine revelation to me.

3rd watch! I wanted to focus on Michael B. Jordan’s performance and all the nuances he gives to the twins. It’s incredible what he’s doing here, the expressions and ticks of both of them are so distinct.
Also highlighting the editing, the cuts are sharper than a razor blade.

My oh my. I love so much of what this is doing. The cinematography is incredible without being overly flashy, the writing speaks volumes in with a pamphlet’s length, and Mads turns in all-timer performance.
I’m going to be thinking about that ending scene a lot!

This movie feels just effortlessly made. I love these snapshots and vignettes paint such a vivid picture of 1973 Los Angeles.
The goofy side characters (Bradley Cooper was PERFECT)
and the two leads in their debut film, it’s a vibe that I really like!

Great performances and direction outshining so-so writing (some things should have remained unsaid).
The final scene had the whole theater, myself included, in tears however, and it did earn them.

A critic once referred to the Beach Boys' "Surf's Up" as a song of "crumbling majesty." A place where "columnated ruins domino."
Shadow of the Colossus is just this, divorced of any of that song's whimsy but in place a sense of wonder and mystery unlike anything else.

Snap is short, but incredibly cute and fun. And the "Snap/Stadium Stations" that you could find around? Man, there was one even at my town's park district, it was so cool!!!

If you don't like it, you're just not here for a good time lil' homie.

I came out publicly as a woman on my 25th birthday by creating a coming out post and, in-between messages of support, doing runs of Hades. So my day consisted of 6 straight runs out of Hades and people telling me they were proud and loved me as I am. Pretty swell. 💖
