There are so many ways in which Laughton’s film demonstrates the ways that the world has let these children down and this last hypocrisy underlines it all. Lillian Gish’s character has no time for the nonsense. She swiftly marches the children away from the hysteria and safely home.

The angry mob fills the street with burning torches and makeshift weapons like villagers heading to Frankenstein’s castle. Evil doesn’t look like a monster in this world. It looks polite and respectable. Now the townspeople bray for blood. They become hunters themselves.

That the Spoons lead the mob is very telling. These are the same folks who not only fell for the preacher’s charm offensive but actively encouraged Willa to let him into her life. They who act the most aggrieved by his crimes enabled them and failed to protect the children they now cry for
