My solution for the past 4 years has been swapping a USB cable that goes to a hub between my laptop and an extension that runs to the top of the desk then changing the input on one of my monitors (the other auto detects)

Depending on the icons it might be worth pre-rendering them as PNGs and then using the image tint feature, depends on the type and size though.
