It should be impossible for things to escalate this quickly. One moment, Shane had been hugging his mom bye, and she'd told him—jokingly!—that he'd better not gamble away his tuition money in Vegas. And he hadn't. Obviously. A single year at college hasn't changed him that much. But the very next moment—or at least that's what it'd felt like—Shane had been breaking up a stupid bar fight between two of their own after a brutal loss to UNLV. Thankless job. And in the end it'd only made things worse. Who knew bail was so expensive? Shane can't tell his parents. He simply doesn't fuck up like this. Ever. But Googling 'make much money very quickly' yields depressing results. Baker, one of the seniors on the team, was the one who'd told Shane about the app. Well, Shane and a few others. Just in passing. "It's all handled through the platform, so clients don't even know your name. And everyone's super vetted, so you're not gonna get, like, axe murdered. If you enjoy sex, you might as well make a few bucks from it, right? Like half my English seminar's done it once or twice." Shane had been in dire need of more than a few bucks, though. "But you can make much more if you'll take it up the ass," Baker had added, grinning like he'd just told a good joke, and Shane— Shane is here, in the arms of a man whose dick he just really enjoyed putting in his mouth, which he's maybe having a mild to moderate crisis about—until the man takes hold of Shane's chin in a way that pushes things way past 'moderate.' "If things don't work out with your boyfriend," says the impossibly beautiful man at the hotel bar, "I'm, like, right here." That's preposterous. It ought to be a joke but very clearly isn't. Henry still smiles in return. "I don’t believe I'll take you up on that." The man looks unimpressed. "Still," he says, sounding as though he'd argue his point if prompted. As though he'd very much like to do so, even. Jesus. But he wouldn't gain much from that. "He's my fiancé, actually." That doesn't take at all. "Why, though?" "Because I love him," Henry says, far more patient than the situation really calls for. "I'm marrying him in the morning for the same reason." The man doesn't as much as blink. "So I'll see you after the divorce," he says easily. Henry huffs out a disbelieving little laugh. "Do you honestly believe that?" "A boy can dream, can't he?" Well. Henry can hardly forbid him from that. They part ways with a fleeting handshake; amicable on Henry's part, wistful on the other man's. The next day, Henry stands tall when he says 'I do.' Two years later, he makes a fateful appointment with divorce lawyer Alex Claremont-Diaz. Turns out, they do see each other before the divorce. And during. But Henry doesn't ask Alex out until after. The night before their wedding, Alex grins widely over a glass of champagne. "Numbers on me opening my vows with 'I told you so?'" "You would, wouldn’t you?" Henry says, so fond his heart aches from it. God. How had he ever thought he was in love before? "Nah. Got the rest of our lives to say that, don't I?" "Yes," Henry agrees, smiling. "You do." "So tomorrow," Alex says, his whole expression softening into something much gentler. It's Henry's favourite. "Tomorrow, I'm going to talk about how you make me extraordinarily happy every day, and how I knew - from the first instance I saw you - that you were the one for me. Because you are." And he does.

"Stay," Alex says, softer than he'd planned to. He only just stops himself from tacking on a 'please.' Fuck, he's terrified. It's the third time they've hooked up since he picked Henry up at that bar. Or since Henry picked him up. The details blur a little. Alex only really knows that he'd taken one look at Henry, thought 'yes,' and moved. Henry's the one watching him now. Too cautiously. Alex doesn't like that one bit. "I don't want to overstay my welcome." Famously something that happens when someone has asked you to stay. "You wouldn't. Promise." Henry tilts his head a little to the side as he keeps studying Alex. "This is, er. New." Does he have to make a big deal of it? "Might as well get used to it, sweetheart. If we're gonna get married and all." It takes a second before the joke seems to really land. Then Henry grins. "Strange. I don’t recall a proposal?" "Well, not yet," Alex says. "If I'd proposed to you, you'd know it." It's meant to make Henry laugh - because this is what they do, isn't it? It's their whole thing. They make dumb jokes about being together forever, and they fuck. It still somehow makes the cut for Alex's top three relationships. Easily. Henry cocks his head the other way, mustering up another smile. "I want my best friend to officiate." "… Sure." "And we're having a cheese platter before dessert." "These are your conditions for coming back to bed?" "For marrying you," Henry corrects. "I, er. I may not require any additional incentive to stay the night." That makes Alex go pleasantly warm. "Cool," he says, pulling back the covers. "C'mere, then." Henry does. He settles back opposite Alex, putting a hand on Alex’s hip in a way that couldn't feel more natural. "There's something I'd like to ask you," Henry says, speaking as softly as Alex had before. "You should," Alex says quickly. "I honestly can't imagine I'd say no." This time, Henry’s smile comes easily. "You don't even know where I'm going with this." Alex swallows. "No. But I do know there's something I'd like to ask you, too." Henry leans in to brush his lips against Alex's cheek. "It's settled, then. A summer wedding." … Fucking dick. "Take me to dinner first, would you?" Henry takes a measured breath. "I would, yes. That’s the thing." Oh. "I'd really like that," Alex admits, as evenly as he can manage. Henry’s hold on his hip tightens a little. "Good," he says, looking really endearingly pleased. "That's… That's really good." Yeah. It is. And if Alex falls asleep while low-key workshopping an actual proposal, that's nobody's business but his own.

Henry puts a hand unsubtly on Alex’s arm, thouroughly enjoying how that immediately makes Alex smile. "True love, I suppose," he says. Alex smirks a little, clearly catching on. "Nothing superficial, then?" "Oh, no," Henry agrees. He moves his hand a little lower, right to where Alex's t-shirt ends. Skin to skin. There'll be more of that if he gets his way. "If I happened to be outrageously bloody easy for, say, your eyelashes, it'd matter little. I want a real connection. Something quite pure." "I respect that," Alex says, breathless. "Likewise, if your accent was a hundred percent doing it for me, you wouldn't hear of it." "Appreciate that." Henry lets his eyes slide slowly down Alex's face, then down his neck, then lower. "You have... Immaculate taste in trousers." "Your technique for rolling up sleeves is basically flawless." "Your analysis of current events is both insightful and nuanced-" "You're really hot," Alex says, breaking into a grin. "Fuck, man. What's it gonna take?" Truthfully? Just one look at him. Henry hadn’t stood a chance. He slides off the bar stool, stepping into Alex’s space. They're at eye-level like this. Something to be said for that. "I'm so glad we got to know each other before jumping into anything purely physical." "Mm, yeah. Real treat." Alex wets his lips a little. "You should kiss me. Also, I want to fuck you." God. The problem with this whole thing is that Alex is seriously refreshing. So much so that Henry can't promise he'll have it in him to kick Alex out at the end of the night. "And then we'll walk down the aisle, yes?" he suggests, smiling. Alex studies him for longer than the joke really requires. "If you'll have me, yeah." It's a touch less flippant than Henry knows what to do with. He does, however, know what to do right this moment. Only one thing for it. The kiss is bloody life-changing.

There's a hand digging into Henry’s thigh. It feels purposeful. A little authoritative, even. Very close to absolute perfection. Especially when the touch roams higher, almost where Henry craves it most. Henry sinks into it easily, moaning without shame as he raises his head just enough to meet a pair of intensely brown eyes. Gorgeous. The man's utterly perfect body helps, too. Finally, the man's hand wraps tightly around Henry's cock, and Henry— Henry's eyes fly open. He's alone. His morning alarm blares angrily. Jesus. He's hard. That's probably not surprising. Still, he hasn't woken up this hard since… That is not a productive train of thought. He forces himself out of bed, stumbling into the bathroom and splashing cold water on his face. It doesn't particularly help. He can believe he'd dreamt about Alex. He's only met the man once. A whole bloody year ago. He's watched the video loads, though. Not that kind of video. An exercise video. Completely innocent. And if he finishes each workout sweaty and flushed not only from the intense choreography, that's nobody's business but his own. God. He can’t believe he'd actually dreamt about Alex. Again. He gets in the shower with the genuine intention to quickly wash off and get back out. He doesn't succeed. … Maybe it wouldn't hurt if he finally renewed his gym membership? — Alex remembers him, too. The next time he urges Henry to put his hips into it, the context is very different.

Alex’s birthday is two weeks before Henry’s—but Alex is a whole year younger. Which means Henry still has eleven and a half months until Alex learns that Henry is the person who’s meant for him. Unless, of course, Henry manages to avoid him for the rest of their lives. He’s not having much luck so far. You’d think it’d be easier; it’s a huge campus with thousands of students. There’s no reason that Alex, specifically, should turn up around every corner. But it’s possible it's actually been like this since the day they both enrolled; their schedules inexplicably aligned, their paths crossing time and time again. Fate, et cetera. Only Henry has never taken notice before. He's had no reason to. There’s certainly no ignoring it now.

“Did you mean what you said, earlier?” “I’ve said a lot of things.” “What you said about me,” Henry clarifies. His smile is deceptively sweet. “You said that I’m hot.” Alex freezes. He’s not sure what Henry sees in his expression, but whatever it is, it makes Henry’s smile widen into a grin. Shit. The thing is, though, that Henry really doesn’t look upset. Not even a little. Suddenly, Alex wishes that he’d paid more attention to June’s endless supply of gossip magazines. Is Henry Wales gay? Bi? Open to experimenting? “I said your stage persona is hot,” Alex points out. He’s mostly stalling for time. “I didn’t actually say—” “It was implied, wasn’t it?” Henry cuts in, and fuck, he’s really enjoying this. “I must say, I’m very flattered.” “It can’t be the first time you’ve heard it,” Alex argues, well aware that he’s only painting himself further into the very same corner. It's not a corner he minds. “Really, you must get that all the time.” “I’m flattered,” Henry says, speaking very deliberately, “because it came from you.” Right. So, not straight. Alex swallows, his heart thudding in his chest as Henry watches him closely. There’s a purpose to the way Henry lets his eyes slide across Alex’s face, down his chest, then lower. When their eyes lock again, the tension has Alex holding his breath. Henry smiles. “A pity, isn’t it, that I left my hot stage persona at home?” Alex’s mouth falls open. The fuck. “You,” he says, slowly getting to his feet, “are insufferable. I can’t believe how annoying you are.” “You know, I don’t think you mean that.” Henry leans back a little on the piano bench, his arched eyebrow both a challenge and an invitation. “I don’t think you mean that at all.” “Shut up,” Alex counters with a smile. He takes a step closer, watches Henry’s own smile widen. “Shut all the way up.” “Is this when I tell you to make me?” Henry wonders teasingly. He’s grinning fully, now. It’s fucking irrisistible. “I feel like you’d be into that.” “You don’t know me that well,” Alex tells him flatly. He’s never, ever gonna live this down once Henry figures out how right he is. “You don’t really know me at all.” “I know that I want to know you more,” Henry says plainly. Alex pauses, waits for some sort of punchline, but… there is none. Henry is meeting his gaze steadily. There’s an eagerness in the way he leans forwards a little, ready to meet Alex halfway but still content to let Alex make the first move. And God, is Alex willing to initiate.
