Ended up taking a break from social media, the news, etc. over the weekend, and uh, how's everyone doing?

Also, this is your friendly reminder that with a few grape vines, and some yeast, you can start making your own wine this year.

Wait, I didn't know the TikTok ban would affect CapCut! That's what I've been using to edit my YouTube videos and I've prepaid for a year of Pro.

(I know it's the same company, ByteDance, but there was uncertainty on the forums about whether it'd be affected.)

When you need to 3D print another drive caddy tray for your PC and you realize you didn't pick up any nylon filament, and PETG just isn't going to cut it. 😭

(I needed to go to bed four hours ago. 😭)

After screaming into the void a bit, I feel a little better. The stressors that I've had to deal with the past few months feel like they've been hitting me 24/7. (The the few years before that weren't a walk in the park either.)

Going through an estate is hell; I spent an afternoon to find out where my dad's car went, and that we can only get it back for $8000 (the car only had $4000 left on the loan). The only reason it was repo'd was because the loan was through a VA servicer, and they were auto-notifed of his passing.

After losing your insurance through a job loss, you get new insurance that should be covered, and you find out that the doctor that you see a few times a year doesn't take it (even though you double checked ahead of time) and it's probably going to be a roughly $200 bill every visit. 😵‍💫

Well the trolls have apparently found BlueSky, apparently staying over on X isn't fulfilling if people agree with you without trying to have a one-sided fight. 🤦‍♀️

I'm pretty sure I accidentally stumbled across Chinese BlueSky a few minutes ago.

Does anyone know of any translation tools? Also, how do I pinyin my phone input/keyboard?

Well the TikTok ban is still happening. Any bets on how long it's going to take Gen Z to burn things down?

Does anyone have any good suggestions for an independent #audiobook platform?

I'd like to transition off of Audible, and my local library's digital selection is abysmal on most fronts.

People are all like, "3D printers are just for toys."

And I'm printing things like a bread slicer, displays for my business, and a hydroponic system to have fresh veggies. (Also, they're not nearly as expensive as people think.)

One of the most difficult things with dementia is having to explain that dad's dead and he's not coming back.

It only happens on the bad days, but it makes grieving his loss so much harder.

When you're hit with another night of insomnia but the smell of fresh bread tells you it might be worth staying up a little longer.

(Also, bread machines are kind of magical.)

It's wild how much this feels like early twitter.

In a very tumultuous world, it brings a little familiarity and comfort.

Good news on Rednote, sounds like the Chinese government has told Rednote that IPs will not be separated (at this time).

Be mindful of their community guidelines if using Rednote, so that American and abroad Chinese can continue to communicate with their families and friends back home.

I think people who are concerned about the social and political "consequences" of Michelle Obama skipping the inauguration don't know enough working class families and where this ranks on their list of concerns.

Seeing Americans flood Rednote genuinely excited to learn about Chinese culture AND protest the TikTok ban = exciting. Watching American trolls flood Rednote and watching IPs get separated out as both our governments lose it, and International Chinese lose contact with their families = horrible.

Speaking of the US failing tax payers, can't wait to have my speed throttled some more thanks to Net Neutrality going out the window again: www.npr.org/2025/01/03/n...
Net neutrality is struck, ending a long battle to regulate ISPs like public utilities
A U.S. Court of Appeals this week ruled that the FCC did not have legal authority to revive the so-called net neutrality rules that were first introduced a decade ago under the Obama Administration.

Watching the US TikTok exodus is so depressing; especially since it's helped me get through some hard economicbtimes. But props to @bytedance.bsky.social to moving features to Lemon8 so fast. IDK what you pay your dev teams, but definitely give them a nice bonus and a raise.

Finally got the last major bit of my IT security taken care of.

So, now it's just getting more practical stuff done, like helping family, getting a long list of responsibilities caught up, etc.

It feels weird to be in a place where I'm probably going to be running my own business (or businesses).

It's not a fun time to have PTSD right now, the only thing that's giving me any solice is that hopefully I'll be living in the country in a few years and if all goes well making my own wine.
