A photo of me standing in an open area of the 'middle level' taken from the upper area. A wall made up of fins may be seen behind me on the other side of a small chasm hosting the lower area. The view upwards towards Skull Arch, a double archway that has formed as a large section of rockwall has eroded. Two circular openings (three if yo count the outflow) may be seen partitioned by a bridgeway. Looking down from one of the upper levels towards the canyon floor below. A few pillars of sandstone may be seen among the rockwalls as well as a decent amount of plant growth on the floor. Looking down into a large open area of the canyon, where some shrubs have taken root among the sandy soil. On the far edge, multiple spires of sandstone may be seen rising from the rock wall.

Several hillsides of sedimentary rock with needle-like pillars frame a valley below. In the distance a snow dusted hill may be seen. A layer of white sedimentary rock sits above a canyon of orange sandstone with a collection of spires rising behind it in various layers of the two. A few Mule Deer traipsing away after the third and final time I ran into them on the early morning hike. An open shrub land may be seen in front of several large pillars of cedar mesa sandstone.

A few Mule Deer that I continually came across on the early portion of the hike. A small pillar of sandstone may be seen behind the various shrubs the deer were foraging around. A collection of sandstone 'needles' rising up towards the morning sky. Layers of red and white sedimentary rock may be seen among them. In the lower frame, some more eroded pillars make up the valley floor. A crow sits on a small tree with several sandstone pillars/needles behind it. The trail descends a narrow rock staircase before taking an abrupt turn into a thin canyon. A tree stump may be seen stuck in the upper canyon to help with a sense of scale. Enough to comfortably walk, but not wide enough for two people at side by side.

Some of the more robust 'Needles to be' under early morning light. Sunrise may be seen hitting the clouds above, turning them into a nice salmon color. The white sedimentary layer of nearby rock may be seen up close as the dominant layer. Sunrise from the Elephant Hill viewpoint, with what I believe to be Pinnacle Point spiking up in the distance. A large pillar of cedar mesa sandstone rises up. Broken boulders of a whitish sandstone may be seen below. Looking up at a large sandstone hillside/pillar, which may be what is considered 'elephant hill'. In the foreground are a variety of desert shrubs in green. I never quite figured out what the actual elephant hill was.

The historical cowboy camp filled with tables, storage, containers, and a wood fire stove along with other miscellaneous items. The rock walls and ceiling near the fire stove is charred black. Site was used from the early 1800s until 1975 when ranching in the park was no longer allowed. A view from the upper area of the cove below, with Pinnacle Point in the distance as well as a closer Butte. On the left rock wall, deep colored streaks may be seen on the walls, that appears to be from mosses/algae staining the walls when water was present. A view from the upper area into the cove, showing how the upper rock creates an awning that runs along the walls. Various shrub may be seen in the lower area along with some junipers. A view of Salt Flat Butte from the upper area of the trail. Mostly a rich red color, a streak of lighter brown similar to the area I'm standing may be seen about 3/4s of the way up.

A view of Newspaper Rock in full, displaying a variety of petroglyphs depicting animals; including snakes, sheep, deer, bear paws, turtles/tortoises, antelope, and others, as well as a few figures on horseback and some symbols including at least one apparent wagon wheel. The upper area of the main portion of Newspaper Rock, which in addition to many bear paw prints (identifiable by their six digits) appear to focus on more symbols than in the lower portion. Just above the wagon wheel near center is what looks like a large bear with horns or a devil-man of some sort. Sign Post located at Newspaper Rock, reads: Newspaper Rock Archaeological Site Newspaper Rock is a petroglyph panel etched in sandstone that records approximately 2,000 years of early human activity. Prehistoric peoples, probably from the Archaic, Basketmaker, Fremont and Pueblo cultures, etched on the rock from B.C. time to A.D. 1300. In historic times, Ute and Navajo people, as well as European Americans made their contributions. In interpreting the figures on the rock, scholars are undecided as to their meaning or have yet to decipher them. In Navajo, the rock is called “Tse’ Hane’” (Rock that tells a story). Unfortunately we do not know if the figures represent storytelling, doodling, hunting magic, clan symbols, ancient graffiti or something else. Without a true understanding of the petroglyphs, much is left for individual interpretation. Newspaper Rock is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby to Newspaper Rock was this tall set of pillars on the top of a butte. Snowfall may be seen accumulating on the distant butte.

Looking up towards Landscape Arch with its needle-like land bridge, which is the longest in the park (306 ft at its widest). At only 6 ft in diameter at its thinnest, it was once thicker until a large portion came crashing down in the 1990s. The rubble field may be seen below to the right. Looking back towards the La Sal Mountains to the east, still coated in the glow of the early morning sun. On each side of the sandstone slab lies a steep dropoff. A large rock structure to the right frames the valley of sandstone below under cottony clouds. Double O Arch from up close, the lower O to the right is big enough to comfortably sit in, but not stand.

Petroglyphs found near the Wolfe House at the beginning of the trail; make sure to do the very short spur to reach when hiking. Depicts wild sheep along with figures on horseback (meaning they were created after 1600 when horses were introduced), as well as either dogs or coyotes around the edges. Standing at one one of the pillars of Delicate Arch looking towards the other. This arch measures 46 ft tall and 32 ft wide (interior) and is the largest free standing arch in the park, and one of the most famous geological features in the world. The large, currently empty, bowl located just beside Delicate Arch. It makes an almost amphitheater or forum setting in sandstone and provides great seating when waiting for either the sunset or your place in line for a photo-op with the arch. Delicate Arch and its forum-like bowl beside it, as the setting sun breeches the thick clouds along the horizon.

A massive block of rock rises above the main road in Arches National Park, surrounded by a sunbow on a chilly morning. I believe the slab was actually The Organ, which is across the road from the turnaround for the trail if hiking. Looking down the thoroughfare of Park Avenue, with a row of towering pillars on the right of the valley and a large block on the left. The trail descends through the center of the wash. In the foreground, sheets of slanted sandstone formed along the was that makes up the trail, along with some larger boulders. In the distance, a massive slab of rock with some pillars forming throughout under cloudy skies. The early morning sun may be seen poking through the clouds behind the slab, which is called The Organ. A huge pillar of sandstone that has three tops rising above it. In the lower portion of the slab (right of center), Baby Arch may be seen as a hole through it.

Turret Arch and the surrounding rocks are finally bathed in the morning sun while shades of pink light up the distant clouds. A tall pillar may be seen on the left of frame while the upper half of the photo is a light sky blue. The large bridge that makes North Window passes overhead while the left half of the frame is bathed in vibrant sunrise yellows and oranges. A person looking up at the arch from the other side helps understand the scale of it. Rock stairs lead to the North Window and the arch above in as the sun continues its morning color show. Looking through North Window towards Turret Arch and surrounding pillars. Some pastel colors still linger from the sunrise. A person may be seen at the left edge of the window for scale.

Part of the 'thousand springs complex' of Idaho nestled between the Snake River Canyon rim and the Snake River, this massive outpouring of water is known as the Niagara of Springs and creates a huge rush of water out of the hillside. In the area you may also find abundant birding opportunities.

A Japanese style building may be seen behind two Maples in full fall coloration, mostly in the orange hue. A Japanese style rock garden, with a raindrop shaped grass/moss patch in the center surrounded by raked concentric lines. Outside of this, a vibrant fall colored Japanese Maple in shades of orange as well as various green shrubs and trees beyond. A stunning Japanese Maple, with the foreground on the left in shades of orange and red while the backside towards the right is more of a yellow orange hue. Much of the trunk and limbs may also be seen. The vibrant orange Japanese Maple that is the main attraction in fall at the garden may be seen on the other side of the pond from where this photo was taken. In the foreground two Sandhill Cranes statues may be seen 'foraging' along the shore of a pond. Much of the surrounding foliage is dark to light green with some yellows, and a few patches of bright orange may also be seen intermittently.

Morchella deliciosa Morel The name Morchella deliciosa applies to more than one kind of morel, as they are especially complex to identify. Common in the Pacific Northwest, this mushroom fruits in spring and has a hollow interior. Coprinopsis atramentaria Common Ink Cap Inky caps grow in abundant clusters on decaying wood. The gills liquefy into a black ink that helps to spread the spores- sometimes in a matter of hours! Cortinarius violaceus Violet Cort Cortinarius is the largest genus of mushrooms in the world, with over a thousand estimated species. The deep color of the violet cort is unforgettable and is usually quite rare except for in old-growth forests (unreadable but I believe it said something about Olympic National Parks). Lactarius deliciosa Saffron Milk Cap Lactarius species are identified by a milky fluid that exudes from the mushroom when broken. Archaeologists discovered a 2,000-year-old Roman mosaic depicting this fungus that is common to pine and spruce forests. Geastrum saccatum Rounded Earthstar The rounded earthstar uses its “arms” to anchor itself to the soil where it decomposes decaying wood. Raindrops hitting the puffball help disperse its spores

A collection of mushroom displays located in the visitors center to help identification. Going left to right, top to bottom, reads: Cantharellus formosus Pacific Golden Chanterelle One of the best-known wild mushrooms in North America, the chanterelle typically displays a cheerful bright orange color. Growing with western hemlock and other conifers, the pacific golden chanterelle was recently determined its own species uniquie to the Pacific Northwest, separate from the Cantarellus cibarius. Stropharia ambigua Questionable Stropharia Cottony, white veil remnants hang on the edge of the cap of the Stropharia ambigua. The surface of the cap appears slimy and moist, and it thrives in dark, cold places like rain forests or along streams. Chlorophylum rachodes Shaggy Parasol The species name comes from a Greek word for “ragged” or “tattered”. There have been sightings of several hundred of the shaggy parasol under a single tree. Turbinellus floccosus Scaly Chanterelle Find this vase shaped mushroom growing in conifer forests where it forms a mutually beneficial relationship with spruces, firs, and hemlocks. The mushroom helps the tree absorb water and nutrients while the tree provides sugars and amino acids. Sparassis Cauliflower Mushroom The wavy, ribbonlike lobes of the cauliflower mushroom is parasitic on the roots of trees, especially of Douglas-fir. In the Pacific Northwest, over 50-pound specimens have been found, though generally are around 1 to 5 pounds. Amanita muscaria Fly Agaric This brilliant red to orange mushroom with white spots is one of the most widely recognized mushrooms in America, often represented in pop culture, art, fashion, décor, video games, and television. The name “fly agaric” refers to the ancient practice of using the mushroom to stupefy flies. Boletus zeleri Zeller’s Bolete Showing off a red stem, blackish brown cap, yellow pores, and shades of blue when bruised, the Zeller’s is one of the most colorful boletes. Cont in thread A massive exposed root structure from a fallen tree along the trail. A variety of green shrubs, ferns, mosses, and leaves may be seen surrounding on all sides. Beads of moisture/slime pool along the underside of this mushroom in the Fomitopsis genus. This whole trip had surprisingly blue skies while in the rain forests, leading to a lot of mushrooms (and one hiker) sweating in the sun. A large tree that has snapped near its base lays suspended over the trail. A few other smaller trees that were likely taken down by its fall have also been suspended in the air around it.

A 2x2 waterfall flowing down the Sol Duc River into a canyon it is slowly creating. Various shades of green may be seen throughout. A fallen tree lays stretched into the crevice to for scale. A steep hillside with the trail cutting up the left of frame. Some patches of trees may be seen hanging on in this heavily sloped scree field. A jagged ridgeline may be seen in the distance along the middle right under cloudy skies barely above the ridge. Looking across the seven lakes basin from back on the loop trail as you begin the long descent. I believe the most visible lake is Long Lake, with Sol Duc in the distance. Various peak spires may be seen rising up around the basin and among further ridges under thick clouds barely higher than the trail. The best view towards Mt Olympus that I saw. A slight break in the thick clouds looks in towards Blue Glacier and the Mid Peak area of the mountain on the opposite side of an unseen valley. Snow fields leading towards the glacier mix in with the clouds.

Marymere falls, plunging 90 ft and the surrounding bowl area. The viewing platform edge may be seen in the lower right along with a couple trees growing on the left frame. Established vegetation on the rock wall (right) further away leads to moss growing on the edge of the water flow. A pile of fallen trees that have gone over the falls lay trapped in the basin below. One near and one far wooden bridges made from split trees may be seen along the trail crossing over Barnes Creek. A heavily moss tangle of branches drape down the left of frame. A merged and split pair of trees grow with thick roots encompassing a large boulder.The trail may be seen wrapping around them to the right. A large fallen tree lays suspended over the trail with a variety of tree species growing in the area around it. Moss may be seen growing on all surfaces.

The trail passes by a large tree that has fallen and gotten wedged in the air between several other trees. A break in the overgrowth reveals a view to the distant shore covered in evergreens. Close by is a patch of undergrowth and fallen trees. A large tree that has snapped in half witht the broken half laying across the lower frame. Surrounding it are mostly evergreen trees and green ferns. One deciduous tree in the center has started its fall transformation, adding contrast to the photo. A mother and kid Elk grazing in the campground area at the beginning of the trail.
