Exactly. The point of a social safety net isn't to replace the care we give our loved ones. It's to help us all participate more equitably, more effectively, and more sustainably in a shared project of care.

Now, we can't actually DIY society. Some people--eg kids--can't take care of themselves. And some jobs don't pay enough to make ends meet. Yet, as I show in Holding It Together, we maintain the DIY illusion by relying on women to fill the gaps, instead. 9/
