I just bought this beautiful edition of one of my formative books recently: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. A book which first awoke my love for mysterious houses, grumpy, unlikeable characters, heartwarming stories, and also, Yorkshire. I'm looking forward to a reread.

Excerpt from manuscript: “You know you can’t just go around telling the more well-off girls you’re their superior, right?,” Iriya said, her voice quiet enough not to carry out into the corridor. “Ralitsa in particular, she has actual connections, she could get you in trouble.” She put a hand, warm and soft on Stani’s arm, coaxing her to look at her. Iriya’s dark eyes sparkled in the firelight, awaking a dull ache in Stanimira’s heart. Excerpt from manuscript continued: Right now, there were two things she truly wanted in life: to become what she’d always known she could be, a great warrior, a knight that would reap fame and glory, and do so with honour; and to live out her life with this girl by her side, loving her and being loved by her. It was ironic, painfully so, that she seemed to be the only person to believe the two were not only possible, but attainable at the same time. Even Iriya was tentative in weaving dreams of their future together, putting more stock in their knighthood. And Ralitsa knowing of what was between the two of them, with her connections no less… Didn’t bode very well. Stani huffed and pushed her fists into her pockets, her nails digging into the heels of her palms. Taking her frustrations out on Iriya would be wrong, undeserved. But then, something stung the knuckles on her right hand and she remembered: what Iriya was saying, what she herself had told Ralitsa, what Iluaneh had given her.

An hour and a half's writing session during my lunch break today has resulted in over 2.1K words - one whole chapter - in the first draft of my fantasy trilogy (book one).

She was. They were. Whatever it was that they were. Whatever word could name the state they were currently in. They were breathing, however heavily, and that had to be enough.

A short story of mine will be going out to my local in-person writing group tomorrow in preparation for our quarterly meeting, so they can provide feedback, and I'm getting anxious about it 😬

Excerpt from manuscript: This gift of mine used to be party trick back at school, when I would prank people and make other girls jealous when I could adapt my face to whatever the top celebrity of the time was. I would get in trouble sometimes, but mostly, people just saw me as a freak. Not so much a danger, as a weirdo to keep at an arm’s length. So I decided to make myself both.

After much frustration and effort, the bookshelf is set up, and in addition to books (and space for more of them), it now houses games, wine, candles and plants (those until I kill the one that can be killed).

My newest WIP is one that my brain begged to start writing in October, so I did to shut it up.
It's a literary novella with elements of magical realism and dual timeline and POV.

Excerpt from manuscript: I don't mean to pry on our daughter's progress settling in, but I do take a peek inside. Her bed is the only thing that has the aura of being part of a home, the rest, is all brown cardboard and colourful mess. The desk is covered in a books, the stack ready the topple at the touch of a breeze. I sigh, remembering, vaguely, what it's like to be fourteen. And of course, I didn't get moved halfway across Europe at that age, but change schools and a city, I did. On the railing outside, a jackdaw is perched, its blue eyes peering into the room. I stare back. It caws, whether in greeting or warning, I don't know, and springs into flight. For a split second, I fear it's going to smack straight into the french door and leave nothing but a bloody imprint of itself. I have just enough time to panic what I would tell Willow happened if she came home and found me cleaning bird guts off her bedroom window, before the jackdaw swiftly soars, gracefully avoiding any parts of the house.

Excerpt from manuscript: "We'll be okay." "I hope so, Wera said, eyes stuck somewhere on the horizon, where the towers of St. Mary's cut into the sky. "We have to be. We have each other, what else do we need?" Nina smiled. She stubbed the cigarette Out in an overflowing ashtray and lifted her hand to trace the edge of her partner's jaw. It'd been over twenty years and she still marvelled at this face. Even at fifty, Wera's eyes twinkled youthfully, and her cheeks, always freckled, were reddened from the cold. "I need nothing else." She leant to kiss her, the familiar shape of her lips curving against hers like it had thousands, millions of times before. "Td like some food and a roof over my head, too, please," Wera laughed, but kissed her back, the kiss all the more delicious for her smile. "All right, food and shelter, then me. I guess someone has to have their priorities straight in this relationship."

Excerpt from short story: She wondered what her mother imagined had happened to her when she failed to turn up for the night. Disappearing without a word wasn’t something she’d ever make into a habit, since leaving her mother alone made her feel uneasy. Afina had never complained about being on her own, even if a shadow crossed her eyes whenever Iluaneh contemplated going away to earn a better living, perhaps in one of the port cities. She had always been physically strong and undeterred by any kind of menial labour. Leaving her mother like that — after she had lost everyone else — felt impossible. And now, her short temper might have made that decision for her. Except instead of bettering their plight, she was going to rot in this place of horrors, or go straight to the gallows. She couldn’t imagine any other outcome.

Maeve O’Shea has lost everything: her brother is missing, her father dead, their house and business gone. In the deeply divided and smog-shrouded city of Sheffield, she tries to carve out an existence as a confidence woman, while quietly plotting the downfall of the man she blames for her life coming to pieces. On the other side of town, Eleri Westbrook lives surrounded by every luxury money can buy. But to her it’s suffocating, especially when her parents want to marry her off to a man she hardly knows. Taking her fate into her own hands, she flees her parents’ house, the arranged marriage, and the safety she’s known all her life. When their paths cross, the two young women discover they have much more in common than they had initially thought: their lives affected by rich, greedy men, their rage, and their willingness to take a risk. With a group of unlikely friends and allies, amid rising unrest among the city’s working class, gambling with more than just their immediate safety, but also their freedom, Maeve and Eleri contrive a plot to make the villains pay. And as they do so, slowly they begin to realise that perhaps, with a little bit of cunning and playing their cards right, life can be more than just surviving.

By the time I make it out of the market on the other side from where I entered, my bag is filled with goodies, my mouth watering at the thought of them. As I leave the bustling confines of metal and glass, I spot a CCTV camera directly over my head and I stare into it for a moment, brushing a strand of hair deliberately with my left hand. It’s always fascinated me who sits on the other side of those things, peering into screens in search of mischief and debauchery. What sorts of things they would notice and flag as suspicious. Would a young woman with a shopping bag full of groceries and four knuckles short of an intact hand meeting their eye through the screen raise any alarms? I smirk before I move on. Maybe. Time will tell.

In a sudden wave of inspiration (helped a little by wine), I managed to write a solid chunk of a scene I've been planning for ages, effectively arriving at almost 3K written today.

The hands that she was resting on Zora’s back ended in pointy fingernails, and her mouth was— She needed to get away. She needed to help Zora. And Marton. This was all wrong. All some kind of a trick and they should not allow themselves to be tricked like that. “I don’t think so,” she finally said to the grass-haired woman and began retracing her steps. Perhaps if she could get her bow— “Yes, I do.”

The taste might have been similarly foul. “I guess I’d hoped my first visit here would be more fruitful.” She smiled with just half her mouth. “Oh no, the first times are for failures.” He waved a hand. “Nobody comes out here for the first time ready to pledge their heart away. Is that what you’d hoped for?” She shook her head. “Certainly not.” “Did you want a little kiss at least?” A blush bloomed on those freckled cheeks. “Yeah.” “Did you get it?” She didn’t have to say anything; the way she bit her lip, fighting a smile, gave her away. “Ha! That’s more than I got my first night here.”

Apparently, I didn't notice when I hit 25K in my fantasy project 🎉
Projected length of book 1: 80K.
The novel itself is still stuck with a working title, which is likely to end up being the name of the planned trilogy. But, hey, it is a work in progress 🤷🏻‍♀️
