if you are committed to your corporate benefactors, say it. otherwise, i want the young like Chi Ossé, AOC, the fantastic shortstop Antonio Reynoso, to push for these seats of power. kristen, chuck, and hakeem failed to meet the moment… they declined to represent us. so let’s show them the door.

…none of this is incongruent. this is water finding its level, folks seeing a candidate and making a bet on them. dems would do well to let individual candidates find their space, because allowing for the hemming/hawing of jacobs, schumer, jeffries, gillibrand AFTER momdani won the primary… cowards!

these things are not in conflict: these are candidates finding compelling messages and going from there. that’s gotta be the lesson — you gotta stand for something and people will back you if your policy slate is compelling. mamdani as insurgent, sherrill as insider, spanberger as rising star…

spanberger: how about some stability, a removal from culture war bs and creating a smarter state government which does more for virginians.
November 5, 2025 at 9:02 AM
sherrill: being democratic normal and calling out the feds for pulling the plug on funding important state projects. strong ground game and making inroads with the disaffected.

zohran: affordability. the dignity of the working person. making a government that can make the american dream real for the long-lasting nyer, the immigrant, the midwestern emigre. rejecting the concept that corporate money will buy local elections.

so for fagen to break the mould, even for one verse, becomes so meaningful. that his vocals hide in the mix behind the granny-smith-crisp drums and piano makes me think he and the producers knew that they captured something special, but couldn’t betray steely dan’s aural ethos with actual emotion

fagen sounds exhausted, almost out of breath, actually pleading, earnestly giving into nostalgia, nearly breaking his voice. this is not the steely playbook! you’re not supposed to actually hear the despair, the pitifulness in the vacuum-sealed exactitude of the music… that’s what the words are for!
