And "making a loss" is a good way to get on IRD's radar for Things We Should Look Into (tm)... especially if you seem to be making a habit of it ;-)

Property (developers, corporate lease, etc) very commonly have one company per project/property, for business risk blast radius containment. And that seems okay to me.

But at 3+ companies they absolutely should have a qualified accountant do everything so they don't make IRD angry with them 😬

Unfortunately the whole aphyr site is blocked as a precaution because other parts of the site touch on topics that some parts of the world consider "not for children". (Having followed aphyr for years, it's an understandable choice given the UK law.)

Fortunately the Internet Archive has a copy too.

Yes, I agree, in practice foreign ships wouldn't plan a route that goes to Hawaii and then on to mainland USA without being able to pick up more cargo (triggering the Cabotage issues).

There's enough Asia -> mainland USA ships that it's unnecessarily expensive to sail a half empty ship onwards.

AFAIK foreign ships could also *pick up* cargo in multiple USA ports in series, providing it's all destined for another country.

And at least USA East Coast I gather "pickup in Asia, drop parts of cargo off at each of 2-4 USA ports" is quite a common sailing route.

I believe, from Sal (What's Going On With Shipping) and Wikipedia, that's a misunderstanding of the Jones Act.

AFAICT foreign ships can *drop off* cargo in multiple USA ports in series. They just can't pick up new cargo in the USA and carry it to another USA port.

("Jet Planes" candy -- lollies -- are extremely common here, and have been since I was a child. That specific "crazy" candies link simply because it was the first hit, and a photogenic arrangement.)

Pretty sure you could eat an entire pack of them 😉

Anyone who wants a choice of "thank you" rewards (and there's a huge variety offered!) would be wise to pledge early -- while some of the rewards are "infinite" a bunch of them have limited numbers (and several are all gone already).

Glad to be able to offer some practical support today 💖

Various web browsers removed their RSS feed readers (some years ago), after deciding it wasn't used enough to stay "built in". Eg, Firefox removed it about 6 years ago.

There are some browser addons that will do RSS reading, and some web services too.

Physical dongles now come in USB-C, and are still moderately common in the audio production industry. So not exactly ancient tech yet (although 25 pin D, or PS/2, dongles are kind of hard to use now 😀)

Yes, the audio plugin industry in particular is *extremely* "seasonal sale" driven. The "anchor" pricing ("regular" retail) is often very high, but quite a few of the brands routinely do either bundle discounts or individual item discounts in the 70-90% off range.

I learnt to only buy during sales!

HugOps to whoever is getting to fix it though. At 4+ hours, it's got to be something non-trivial on the backend of the mobile app and Internet banking (common backend AFAIK). And probably not fixed any time soon either, so I'll assume "try again tomorrow" :-/

Okay, that's something of a relief. ANZ Internet Banking login was behaving *weirdly* -- "is this really the actual site" weirdly -- for me about 20 minutes ago, which had me spoked for a bit.

But apparently broken for hours :-/

In my experience the Aranet 4 battery (2 x AA) lasts about 2 years (!!).

I've replaced the battery once in the Aranet 4 I bought mid 2022, and the Aranet 4 I bought late 2023 looks like it'll need its first battery replacement late this calendar.

The quotation marks are because my theory is that it's the expected effect of an intentional change.

To me a bug is "something not working as intended".

(I do agree it seems like a misfeature. But modern software has a lot of user-hostile intentional misfeatures :-/ )

Fast thumb typists are likely already moving to the next letter before the point the thumb is finally out of captouch sensing range, resulting in "thumb lift sensed" being over an adjacent letter.

If so, the "bug" would be very sensitive to typing speed, and X/Y movement while lifting off the key.
October 25, 2025 at 8:15 AM
From watching the video (120 fps slowed down), my suspicion would be that the "highlighted letter" flag is triggered by press down, but someone decided to change the entered letter to be closer to the "thumb lift sensed" timing and position.
