Seems like there is a chance a fringe version of writers week might happen. I really hope this gets funded and reduces the economic damage of Mali’s sabotage.
Council considers ‘guerrilla writers’ festival’ Adelaide City Council will hold a special meeting on Monday to discuss a motion supporting the potential for a “guerrilla writers’ event” to replace the cancelled Adelaide Festival Writers’ Week. Deputy Lord Mayor Keiran Snape told The Advertiser the meeting would determine whether the City of Adelaide would offer financial and venue support to the alternate festival, which is understood to be in the early stages of consideration by Writers SA and Pink Shorts Press, a local Adelaide publisher. “I believe that council should step in and offer support, be that funding or venue locations for this upcoming grassroots event,” Mr Snape said. “I certainly don’t believe council should be getting involved with any further decisions around the event. “I think it’s up to the event organisers, Writers SA, etc to decide what that event looks like.” The motion put forward to council by Mr Snape noted the City of Adelaide’s “long-standing support for the Adelaide Writers’ Festival, and the impacts of the cancellation of the 2026 event. The motion called for the council to “immediately enter into discussions” with Writers SA to “assist the organisation to curate and manage an alternative event in February/March 2026”, featuring “participants who had been prepared to participate in the cancelled event”. The motion calls for council to supplement any funding for the alternative event received from sponsors of the cancelled event or other organisations with an amount not exceeding $250,000, and supply any available council-owned or controlled venues to the event. Writers SA declined to comment when contacted by The Advertiser. It is unclear whether Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah, who is at the centre of the Writers’ Week saga, would be invited to participate. Mr Snape said he was concerned that there had been reputational damage done in the arts and writing community in the wake of Writers’ Week’s cancellation. “I think the council going out of the way to support this grassroot event shows that the council and the city is open for business and that we are supportive of these kinds of cultural events,” he said. “I think it will go somewhat towards repairing the damage caused.” He also pointed to the economic aspects of losing Writers’ Week, pointing to the tens of thousands of visitors to Writers’ Week. “Businesses were relying on those visitors, on that economic activation,” he said. “Having something to fill that gap and bring the activity and those visitors who otherwise would not come, I think is important for our local economic area.” Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith confirmed to The Advertiser she would attend Monday’s meeting. “I will attend the council meeting with an open mind but am not convinced that it is feasible to organise such a major event within six weeks without the administrative infrastructure of the Adelaide Festival,” she said. “We are not talking about a family BBQ but an event attempting to attract tens of thousands of people.”

The cyborg under the bridge has been replaced! Looks like it’s a mural that merges into the greenery in the painting beside it of a forest scene with a leprechaun, a snake, a tiger and a gorilla. Pretty well done if you ask me!

I read a thread on Reddit which showed that the politicians and locals were loathe to use money from the federal government under Obama or Biden. They also felt that sirens would benefit tourists rather than locals in the area who knew what to do in an emergency.

Commissioners' Court Regular Session 10/24/16 Mr. Hewitt: Sirens did not seem to get very much support. The thought was that sirens are better for tourists than local residents. The sirens would only be beneficial for someone that's not familiar with the area, and wouldn't know what to do.

The fun part of going to the Sunday fresh produce market is coming across great deals - an entire tray of fresh figs for $25. I see homemade dried figs and fig ice cream in the near future! (The bag contains the figs I started bagging before @ivalaine.bsky.social realised the trays were available!)

I had a really confused discussion with someone who used 'woke' in a weird way on a Facebook post saying it was woke to censor books. I pretended ignorance of their meaning and asked them to clarify. They ended the discussion with the following screed outlining his own personal interpretation.
Your writing suggests that you are intelligent. It also sounds heart felt. As a result, I can't decide if your are genuine, or deliberately being obtuse. While I suspect the latter, I will assume the former. Either way, I will consider this to be the end of the conversation. I refer to the woke community as a non-affiliated collective of vocal, minority "supporters". A significant number of whom are not members of the minorities for whom they are being vocal. I do not in any way suggest that the minority groups don't have valid issues that need to be addressed, and resolved. However, for the most part, these groups are being supported to do so, and in return, cooler and more rational heads are working toward these goals and a gradual, sustainable shift in perception that will, hopefully, lead to a much more equitable future. When I refer to building something, this is what I mean. The "woke community" are not interested in this building process. They do nothing that actually elevates the minority groups in any way. They do not "build" any kind of social infrastructure that supports any of the minority groups, in any way. What they are very good at doing, is degrading people and tearing down the very structures that are working toward sustainable solutions. They create the stereotypes that many of us are trying to break down. When people think of woke (modern usage) people, they don't envisage Martin Luthor King. They don't envisage Harvey Milk. They don't envision Germaine Greer. As a community, they aren't viewed as the UN, amnesty international or any other group that is actively supporting human rights. What people do envisage is a rabid shrew with a keyboard. The only thing they achieve is creating greater division. That is why I say that the woke community don't build anything, they only destroy. If you were asking out of genuine interest, I hope this helps to clarify things for you. Either way, this is an end to the conversation for me. I wish you well. Bye
