Home Improvement
It’s important to stay on top of contractors. During a 90’s shoot we played with the idea of hard-hat-worker. I laughed so hard I was amazed any shots weren’t blurred.

Old house (see my tub shots) under renovation, some tools and a hard hat, tool belt, and a model with a sense of humor. That’s the perfect recipe for some serious fun sessions! Our red-head green-eyed model was willing to play along, and the result is just magical. She’s actually quite handy at home repairs, too.

When I was starting out as a photographer, working my way through high school and college, there were some amazing models who helped me out. Basically, it was prints-for-time before that was a thing. They were students, cheerleaders, secretaries, actresses, friends, friends-of-friends. A few in particular were incredibly kind and giving of their time, like this young lady here. This was shot on a favorite hillside in the Ozarks. It was incredibly hot - as usual - in Arkansas. We both got chewed alive by chiggers (a summer curse) and she was such a kind person she was willing to model for me the following week for some advertising work with chigger bites all over! A wonderful person.

Jefferson, Texas has a nice public garden where you can almost always find flowers, insects buzzing, and everything to make a nice rest stop. The walking trail is very pretty. And, the town has some seriously good BBQ. Well worth a stop!

There's an age when we are consumed by thoughts of who we are. Shooting at the North Little Rock Old Mill back in the late 70's, this shot was caught in between poses. It remains one of my favorites and I wonder what was going through her mind.

The North Little Rock Old Mill remains a fantastic place to work. It’s more popular now than ever, so you have to plan your soot around busy hours. In the 70’s it was basically abandoned. It was a movie set for Gone with the Wind, neglected, then resurrected with the nostalgia boom of the early 2000’s. A popular park now, back then it was a fantastic place to spend the day. This model worked with me on several shoots where I was testing Portrait Lighting. We were in between poses and she was looking off and down, obviously deep in thought. This capture, candid, remains one of my all time favorites. A young woman, barely a teen, deep in thought of her future. What was going through her mind?

During the early 70’s we did a number of shoots in the Ozarks. The summer weather was phenomenally hot in Arkansas so we aimed for early mornings or late afternoon / early evenings. This model in particular was great to work with. She was particularly good at thoughtful, contemplative mood shoots. Natural light, late afternoon on a favorite hillside.

We only had a couple of shoots before I lost track of this incredibly cute and energetic model. Shot in the 70’s in the Ozarks, we were doing a shoot amongst the trees north of Little Rock. She had a fantastic, playful smile and while I was setting up the camera, she was playing peek-a-boo with the trees. Awesome! You have to love a model who knows how to fave fun. One of my earliest portraits. This Ilford Pan F shot was taken on a Pentax Spotmatic F with the excellent SMC Takumar 85mm f1.8. Shot outdoors in the Ozarks, she is holding her brand new puppy. From this session on I welcomed puppy’s of all ages on shoots, especially with new models. The bring smiles, relax the shy and nervous, and are a topic of conversation that makes collaboration so much easier. I was new to photography and had not learned how to work with light, shadows, and fill flash. This natural light shot had a great pose and smile but I sure blew the light! Such is life. I love its authenticity, though.

Our greenbelt in Katy Texas is rich with squirrels and acorns. They go together like waterfowl and water, or dogs and treats. The abundant rain of the summer months led to a profusion of acorns everywhere! Good eating for our squirrels. They have rich coats, bushy tails, and make perfect models.

When our shoot was done we decided to ham it up in the garage. She wanted some “grunge” shots, but couldn’t help smiling. I’m not sure what she was going to do with the hammer and pruners, and I was laughing too hard to care. Notably, my usual mechanic doesn’t wear Victoria’s Secret - that I know of.

Just before New Years in the early’90s we did a shoot with a fireplace and natural light. The model was incredible for this shoot. Most of my portraits are of girls smiling, looking at the camera. In this series with the sweater and natural light we did a number of whimsical, thoughtful, even sad shots with nude and implied nude. Blonde hair, blue eyes, bare shoulder, and a gorgeous girl. Perfect.

Such a joy to work with. This model had it all - beauty, humor, a dynamic personality and a willingness to work under the most arduous conditions. This is from our series in the 1990’s in Pittsburgh. This beautiful redhead green eyed model worked with us for a couple of years. Shot on a farm near Pittsburgh, we worked there for several days but never found anyone else! It was sort of spooky. Corn taller than the model, rusty farm implements, and all natural wood backdrops. Absolutely perfect summer conditions. Except for the heat. So, nude made sense in the hot, humid, sultry conditions. Shot on Kodak Royal 200, Pentax.

The teen years are thoughtful years. Whenever I was asked to do a portrait of a girl leaving her teen years for adulthood in her twenties it was interesting to spend enough time to get to know her true personality. This young model was very thoughtful and quiet. She fit the mood of the Old Mill in North Little Rock, Arkansas perfectly. Her incredible clear blue eyes were made for this kind of light. The Old Mill back in the late ‘70’ was usually vacant. It was a photographer’s paradise with many angles, viewpoints, flowers and backdrops. It is much busier today and still a great place to shoot! Back in the late 80’s early 90’s I did a number of portraits for girls on the west coast. The easiest way to get the type of shots we wanted was to inject a little fun into the shoot. Blowing bubbles seemed like an interesting idea, and it worked! Our model had a lot of fun with this toy. After that, the smiles came easily. My go-to style has always been the smile, catching it as it happens, a sort of posed candid emotion. Every girl has her own style, her own secrets, and mirroring the emotions behind the expression is the goal.

Portraiture becomes fun when the model joins in the creative process. Experimentation becomes functional when the result is a delight to the senses. This beautiful model made all of the above happen for a young photographer. This shot from the early 70’s was taken in window light with Kodachrome 64. Most of my Kodachrome survived brilliantly, this one was a little faded. So I converted it to monochrome, and I like it better! The dark mood suits the intensity of the eyes.

Napoleon is our squirrel who likes to pose with one hand on his belly like, well, Napoleon. He’s a bit of a ham. He has a mate, Guinevere, who is very prim and prissy. Their two young are growing into adulthood. With winter coming on they are growing thick winter coats and adding some ounces. Squirrels are endlessly fun and fascinating to watch!

Shima is a lovely girl I have worked with here in Katy a number of times. Her husky, Max, is a legend. He wandered into a Home Depot with a chain around his neck, bruised and bloody - obviously abused. He has a missing tooth where he is believed to have chewed off the chain holding him. Such abuse could have created a pup with serious behaviorism issues. Instead, he rose above it all to be the sweetest pup you have ever met. Max exhibits unconditional love at its finest. Shima is a wonderful person to adopt such a pup. Love.

We were shooting at the Katy Railroad Museum in Katy, Texas when Max the husky decided he had to come over and say “HI!!!” When a husky decides to do something, it’s GAME ON! Fortunately Shima had a great grip on the handle and stayed on 2 feet. Max knocked me flat, and was just playing. What a good boy. I love dogs, love working with them, and they add so much to a shoot.

When a shoot is several hours along, it’s a hundred degrees outside, and the model can cool down by playing you know have magic.

Towards the end of our farm shoot the temperature was a hundred degrees and humidity to match. Our model was having fun going nude, and this shot was when she decided to pull her clothes off and lie on the cool grass. The mood was perfect. Instead of whining about the heat, she went with it. She was a perfect model who knew how to roll with it and create magic. Later shots are a combination of topless and full nude, but this one is my favorite for the sheer joy in the expression!

At the end of the shoot, when all is said and done, and it’s time just to be expressive. Light is fading, there’s a feeling of satisfaction of accomplishing “art” whatever that may be. This beautiful blonde was fantastic to work with on several sessions indoors and out. There’s a depth to this shot, which was done under impossible light conditions. And yet I love it.
