I wasn’t in the right frame of mind for witty notes, so I almost didn’t leave one at all, but at the last minute I dashed off a quick, Don’t work too hard. I love you. The stress was making me sappy.

I wrenched my eyes away from her face and shuffled to the back of the boarding line. As I tried to calm my sudden queasiness and racing heart as I dug out my bus pass. What was wrong with me? She was just another woman, and even though I still had that nagging sense of familiarity, I knew I’d never seen her before. There was no way I could have forgotten that face. Maybe that sense of familiarity was the problem. Like that thing where if a robot or doll looked too human, it was really creepy. The uncanny valley. Maybe it was like that with this woman, that she reminded me of someone and I couldn’t put my finger on who, so she was sort of in my own, personal uncanny valley of familiarity. No one else seemed bothered by her. I told myself that must be it, and by the time I handed my pass to the bus driver, my stomach had settled. Still, I chose a seat as far as I could from the strange woman, even though that put me next to The Old Lady Who Likes Fancy Hats and just a row behind Supermarket Tabloid Guy. I slouched low in my seat and braced myself for a full twenty-five minutes of the adventures of Mr. Fizzles.
