There's a 0/10 user review of "Seven Samurai" on Metacritic that lives in my head rent free.
Cat Power's "What Would the Community Think" is maybe the most angry album I've ever heard. Just the sound of a person in a hole with no obvious means of escape, hopeless, and just seething at her impotence. Her first masterpiece, probably.

My first film of 2026 is 1980's "Maniac". It did feel like an accurate representation of what it would be like to be trapped in a room with someone like Gary Ridgeway for 90 minutes, and it's indeed very uncomfortable. The likely rock-bottom budget helps rather than hinders this effect.

The Slant Magazine review for the movie Gremlins says it one could reasonably argue that it’s the most “brazenly racist American film of the 80s”, and no, no you can’t. That’s absurd.

Watched Godard's "Weekend" and I now kind of get the visceral anger people would feel upon viewing Duchamp's Fountain.

"There's a perfectly good storytelling reason every character besides the main character is just a sketch of a human being" did not make me enjoy the experience of watching Marty Supreme more, unfortunately.

Those duochrome Seahawks helmets are so sick.

People mock Dems for having "West Wing brain" all the time, but Trump thinking one nationally televised speech will turn everything around is a pretty darn good example of it.

The KFC pot pie has a top crust but no bottom crust. Still a pie? idk

Joe Burrow was never the same after that photo with Trump at an MMA event.

So, watching it again, and most of Bob and Charlotte's interactions are Charlotte giving a little pity laugh at Bob's semi-amusing jokes, and I have no idea how I ever saw romantic chemistry there. Maybe being a child when I first saw it did that.
I saw "Lost in Translation" when I was 14, and it basically kickstarted my love for cinema, for Shoegaze, and shaped my taste in culture in general. I haven't seen it in 15 years, and it's on Criterion channel now, and I'm absolutely terrified to watch it.

Billy Idol's hits have, unexpectedly, aged very well. Not a hit, but "Adam in Chains" slaps and is proto-Vaporwave.

When I was in elementary school we had a class President race one year and there was this one kid who said he’d put a McDonald’s in the library in his campaign pitch. We all scoffed at that. But Trump has done the same thing 3 times, and it’s worked twice. On adults!

People are really passionate about defending Liam Neeson's honor huh. I'd get it if it was like, Jeff Bridges, doing this, but him?
December 12, 2025 at 2:49 AM
Why are the replies all so adamant that it’s not really him? 2022 (when he went on that goodwill ambassador tour to promote vaccines) was a long time ago, and the number of anti-vaxers has grown significantly. He also started hanging out with Pam Anderson since then.
SCOOP: Academy Award-nominee Liam Neeson narrated a recent anti-vaccine documentary that glorifies RFK Jr.’s rise to power.

In the film, Neeson—a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador—calls the COVID-19 vaccines “dangerous experiments.”

I made a mistake and stopped watching The Bellboy mid way through to read about Jerry Lewis and the multiple sexual assaults and episodes of harassment of actresses alleged against him, and I can't find the will to press play again oops.

I'm curious if Don Jr. has the courage to call his half-brother the r-word to his face. I bet he doesn't. Wimp.

"Showgirls" is a crazy movie in that a (at the time) operating casino allowed its executives to be be portrayed as all corrupt pieces of shit who tolerate a performer at the casino committing an extremely violent gang rape of one of it's employees and sex traffic their showgirls.

Leaving Criterion at the end of this month
For the folks with a Criterion Channel subscription I would strongly suggest watching "Lake Mungo" while it's still there. It's brain-searingly eerie and bottomlessly sad. A must-watch for any fan of horror.

Julia Fox's character in Uncut Gems needs to get on a helicopter to go to the casino to make a fast bet on sports. A vision of a better past.

I cancelled Spotify about 10 minutes after it recommended Candace Owens’ podcast to me when I have zero podcasts (let alone culture/politics podcasts) in my listening history. Imagine if I was someone who was unaware of who she is and just followed the recommendation? That is scary.

Anyways, it’s a shame that Jeff Bridges’ most beloved role is The Dude, when Starman is quite iconic.
December 3, 2025 at 8:52 PM
John Carpenter’s Starman has this wonderful scientist character who thinks everything about the alien invasion is so darn cool, and he just wants to sit down with Starman and learn about his culture and why he’s here. It’s probably a more accurate representation of scientists than most movies imo.

The “Why aren’t you guys doing anything about this?“ reply to a post of a video showing Trump‘s lunacy might be the most annoying class of reply on here lately.
