NEW: Important Context spoke with a dozen people working at NIH about Director Jay Bhattacharya.

The descriptions were universally unflattering, painting the health economist as ineffectual, dishonest, ideological, arrogant, and uncommitted to science.

American “conservatism” has never truly been nonviolent.
walkerbragman.bsky.social
Something the political Right needs to hear more from the Left:

This is our fucking country.
walkerbragman.bsky.social
Hate, resentment, and big money are the foundations of the so-called conservative movement.
walkerbragman.bsky.social
The New Deal Era and subsequent Democratic dominance, the successes of the consumer protection movement, the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act, etc. all taught the political Right that time is not their ally in a democracy.

So they abandoned democracy. They hate it.
walkerbragman.bsky.social
This is why right-wingers and Republicans are constantly trying to do end-runs around democracy.

They stacked the SCOTUS and unleashed political spending.

They weaponized congressional and state legislative redistricting.

They impose barriers on mail-in voting and voter registration…
walkerbragman.bsky.social
The Right hates American democracy and freedom because it recognizes that those things tend to foster policies and cultural shifts they don’t want—consumer protections, environmental regulations, progressive movements, etc.

The right-wing agenda is deeply unpopular. And again, they know it.
walkerbragman.bsky.social
These people fear progress and there have always been those on their side willing to kill to stop it. And they know that.

The goal of framing this march as supporting terrorism against America, or whatever, is to inspire these elements to mobilize. To threaten. To get the event canceled bc of fear
walkerbragman.bsky.social
Violent oppression and intimidation have always been the tools of the political Right in lieu of cultural currency.
walkerbragman.bsky.social
Again, these people want violence. They want their supporters radicalized and ready to commit it.

MIT rejects "compact" proposed by the Trump administration.
MIT prez wrote: it "would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution" and "is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."

The Cass review into children's gender services in the UK continues to be terrible.

A new report from Australia led by the fantastic Dr. Julia Moore - and featuring me - looks into the issues in detail.

My new piece.

Argentina’s libertarian experiment crashed and burned.

But that’s bad for our president, whose ally implemented those reforms.

So now this.

Meanwhile, we gutted USAID.

The Trump administration confirmed that the U.S. bailed out Argentina.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he had directly bought Argentine pesos in global currency markets in a bid to relieve pressure on the nation’s embattled President Javier Milei, a supporter of President Trump.

"30-year-old conservative lawyer and activist who is Trump’s nominee to lead the Office of Special Counsel, which deals with federal employee whistleblower complaints and discrimination" cancelled his colleague's hotel room so she would be forced to stay with him.
www.politico.com/news/2025/10...
In late July, Paul Ingrassia, the White House liaison for the Department of Homeland Security, arrived at a Ritz-Carlton in Orlando with a lower-ranking female colleague and others from their department. When the group reached the front desk, the woman learned she didn’t have a hotel room.

Ingrassia then informed her that she would be staying with him, according to five administration officials familiar with the episode. Eventually the woman discovered that Ingrassia had arranged ahead of time to have her hotel room canceled so she would have to stay with him, three of those officials said.

I am working on a pretty big project. I can’t reveal too much about it, but I am putting out a public call for the worst pandemic takes from right-wing media and think tanks.

Bonus points if the author works in the Trump administration.
