Asking myself: Well, how did I get here?
I'd read about assembling things all along, it just was never clear that you used a computer for that. I think it's an interesting illustration of the assumptions of shared context that we make in technical writing.

Then I'd hand-poke it with a machine monitor program. I think I used Jim Butterfield's. I thought everyone did it that way; I had never seen an assembler program. When I found one later buried on a misc tools floppy, my mind was blown. I had thought assembly was a human activity.

I never really used a 6502 assembler. I had a spiral notebook where I'd write my code, double-spaced or in half pages so that there was room to edit. When I felt pretty good about it in my head I'd translate to machine code using a printed 16x16 opcode table, although I'd memorized a lot of them.

The C64's VIC did DMA (not fetching via the 6502) but used the 6502 clock's off cycle to do it. It was slow and needed the full half cycle. The C128's 8502 at 2 MHz had half-as-long cycles, so the VIC couldn't fetch memory and you had to switch from VIC to the newer VDC when running full speed.

Delightful to see.

Technicality: the C128 had an 8502, but the 8502 ISA was mostly identical to the 6510's, which was mostly like the 6502's. The 8502 ran at 2 MHz instead of 1, but only if using the new 80-column video.

We've never met, I just recognize you. I have haunted the IF space from time to time. Coincidentally I almost posted a quotation of either Blank or Lebling two days ago. ("...and we'd rather give you the thousand words.")

100% Burneko. He's not wrong (he usually isn't 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨) but it's a gloat piece for the already-converted. I wish there were more irrefutable facts so we could at least try to persuade people what a Krampus he was.

That's an interesting perspective. Minus a few people I can count on my fingers, I have no idea who any of you are.

Agree. Teen savagery should be a choice, not an obligation.
