pyramids - terry pratchett

another standalone discworld. not my favourite, and i'm sure some of the maths stuff went over my head, but still fun.

this is the ask from their website, so even the official campaign isn't asking for all or nothing. if you already have the console, but have cancelled the game pass, don't plan to buy new microsoft games, & don't plan to buy new xbox gaming equipment, i think it's okay to keep it for now

frankenstein in bagdad - ahmed saadawi

enjoyed this, tho the many shifting perspectives mean it's not always easy to jump back into the whole narrative if you put this book down for a while. a horror insofar as the reality it reflects is horrifying

the moustache - emmanuel carrère

found the start slow & the writing quite detached & impersonal, so a little hard to get into. but gets v tense & anxious quickly. without wanting to give too much away, big content warning for a very graphic & quite upsetting ending.

the island of missing trees - elif shafak

a slowish start, but this one really grew in me as i read. v touching. i enjoyed the interweaving of nature & history as a way to tell the story through the tree as a pov character. i learnt a lot about cyprus & also appreciated the reading list at the end.

fascism: history & theory - david renton

didn't know DR was a swp guy starting this, but it shows in the text! fine for a broad overview of interwar left discourse on fascism, not great if you want a good analysis on fascism. i forgot i'd finished reading this twice, so make of that what you will

the babysitter lives - stephen graham jones

a book club read. ngl, i didn't really get this one, partly bc i've been too mentally frazzled to follow something with a deliberately confusing & non-linear plot. partly the writing style? but it is very atmospheric, if you like weird, creepy reads
