gonna do a 2025 book thread!

this will be things i'm reading for pleasure, not for work. i imagine i'll update with a new book when i've finished or DNF'd. feel free to mute if this sort of thing bores you.

Stuck on remand for over a year, political prisoners' demands for bail and a fair trial are concessions the government could make today. Yet it's entirely possible this callous government will risk the lives of those who are not convicted of a crime and who – unlike Elbit – pose no threat to anyone

important also to note that all the strikers are in prison on remand - they have not yet been to court, but have been held by the state for months. lammy hadn't even responded to correspondence from MPs about the hunger strike; there is no plausible deniability for uk govt here.
It’s hard to exaggerate how bad the situation is in the UK. There are eight people on hunger strike and David Lammy recently claimed he wasn’t even aware of it. That hunger strikers may actually die is barely even news.

You are ABSOLUTELY NOT going to regret listening to this bird:
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

this is also by no means an isolated attitude. it's also the approach of police scotland (& doubtless other forces across the uk) & it's shameful & cowardly & racist everywhere it occurs
This is a really good statement about last month in particular the opening frames it well.

The police want to frame it as just facilitating the right to free speech.

What it actually was was facilitating the intimidation of traumatised families and children

while i think it is important to expose or draw attention to the violent rhetoric & aims of local fascists & organised racists, especially to remove the cover they use of being 'concerned citizens', i also think there is a line to tread in doing this without overstating their actual efficacy or risk

I wrote ‘Where is the Left?’ for the New Internationalist and have been really heartened by how much it’s resonated with people organising across a wide range of groups and in such a vast array of different places

You can read the article here newint.org/protest/2025...
Where is the left?
Radical organizing was once backed up by a network of physical spaces. How can we rebuild them to support the movements we need now? By Rosie Hampton.

maybe i'm being obtuse but i don't really understand the fuss around the obr "leaking" the budget when rachel reeves has spent the last six weeks doing budget focus group testing via press release. girl you already told everyone what you might do to make sure the headlines were acceptable.

lmao i guess zarah sultana just took her experiences of organising within the nus as a blueprint for how politics should operate, rather than learning the lesson that toxic factionalism is bad, actually
